Lover Reborn by J.R. Ward

First off, I want to thank my friend and soul sister, Jennifer Jones, for loaning this book to me.  Otherwise I’d still be waiting to read this wonderful book!

Description:

Ever since the death of his shellan, Tohrment is a heartbroken shadow of the vampire leader he once was. Brought back to the Brotherhood by a self-serving fallen angel, he fights again with ruthless vengeance- and is unprepared for a new tragedy. Seeing his beloved in dreams—trapped in a cold, desolate netherworld—he turns to the angel to save his former mate, only to despair at the path he himself must take to set her free. As war with the lessers rages, and a new clan of vampires vies for the Blind King’s throne, Tohr struggles between an unforgettable past, and a future that he doesn’t know he can live with… but can’t seem to turn away from.

My Review:

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a beautiful story of redemption, forgiveness and healing. And I must say that I feel that this book was better by far than the last one.

This is the story of Tohrment and No’One.  Both are people full of heart ache, misery and guilt.  Tohrment’s is the survivor’s guilt.  No’One’s is the guilt of her past.  This is also the story of John Matthew and Xhex, and they both are trying to find their place in a new world of being mated but both being independent people.

The torturous courtship of Tohrment and No’One had me pulling out my hair.  Yep, I literally screamed a couple of times at the characters to get moving and do what has to be done!  They still moved at a snail pace.

On the other hand, the action between John Matthew and Xhex was definitely hot and bothered, and kept the lonely reader looking forward to more.  Again, there were times I wanted to yell at them because they were being stupid, but on the whole, I was pleased with their outcome.

To top all this drama, healing, and hurting going on, you actually have two females go into their needing period, one actually being set off by the other.  Talk about trouble right there.  High testosterone plus the needing period equals a whole lot of hormones.

I really enjoyed this story because not only does it give you hope (because let’s be honest, Tohr’s story was one of the more depressing ones), and it kindly sets up for the next book.  Can I just say how excited I am for Qhuinn, Blay, and Layla?  Ooooh, and what about Xcor?  And the baby?  Nothing but potential, and I see great potential for a high impact story that will have you on the edge of your seats and drooling for more.

Other interesting point to be made for this book was the fact that no bonding scent was released.  Did anyone else notice that?  I wish that there had been some, but do you think that it makes a difference to the relationship?

Overall, this was good book, and I’m desperately waiting for the next one. 2013 can’t come quick enough.  I highly recommend this book.

Made Up by Emma Jackson

Description:

Life hasn't been much of a fairytale for Katia recently, but when she lands her dream job as a makeup artist, it seems like things might be about to change.

Whisked off to join a film production in the vibrancy and magic of India, she has to face a fire-breathing dragon in the shape of her new boss and solve complex riddles, such as whether Owen Walker, the movie's gorgeous leading man, is a serial womaniser, a knight in shining armour, or something in between...

Because learning to tell the difference between fact and fiction, might just be the key to finding her happy ending.

My Review:

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Now, normally, I don’t read a lot of YA romance novels (actually, I haven’t really read any since high school… and that was a long time ago).  Personally, I prefer paranormal or fantasy.  But I must say that I gave this book a try to find out if I could stomach YA romance.  And I can honestly say that (at least with this book) that I can.  I thought that this lovely book did a great job of giving a lot of positive messages.  It is all about learning the difference between fact, fiction, and what you want things to be.  I also think it was a great way to remind people that the past is just one more stepping stone towards the future you want, and not to hold yourself back because of your past.

Other things that I liked about this book:

·         Katia!  Who wouldn’t learn to love her as a character?   There is great character development, and I love how the author plays out the story of her past and her coming to terms with it/moving on from it.

·         The romantic play between Owen and Katia.  It seems more realistic than other typical romance story lines that you see.  This is not to say that if you became a junior makeup artist on the set of a movie or such that you would find your true love :P!

·         Owen is not your automatic “Yes, I want to marry him” character, to me at least.  He is more of a “fix himself” character.  But that doesn’t mean that I didn’t enjoy getting to know him.

Overall, this is a good first novel for Ms. Jackson, and I do recommend this book for those who might want to put their toe into the YA romance pool.  I think that I might enjoy reading more of her books in the future.

Every Storm by Lori Wick

Description:

1945, WWII -- When Lieutenant Donovan Riggs experiences trouble with his PT boat, the sailors of "Every Storm "make an unscheduled stop...and a surprising discovery.

Lorraine Archer is an American teacher living and working in Australia. While on a flight with her sister, her daydreams are disrupted by the sounds of the plane going down. Lorri ends up alone on a deserted island in the Pacific. And just when she loses all hope of being found...Donovan and his crew arrive.
Neither Donovan nor Lorri suspect that their encounter is the beginning of something very certain...a future not left to chance, but to faith.

My Review:

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I really enjoyed this book by Ms. Wick.  I read many of her other books, with my favorite being Bamboo and Lace, The Princess, and Sophie’s Heart, but this one comes into a close 2nd

As with her other novels, this one is an uplifting book that refers to God and His hand in our lives.  Lorri is the victim of a plane crash that kills her sister. Donovan, aka Riggs, is a Lieutenant of a ship that is fighting in World War II.  The pain and the troubles they face as they fight to get back home safely are pointed out as reminders that God is with us where ever, whenever, and will not abandon us.

It also touches on the subject of fear, specifically the fear of losing those you love.  Because of the unexpected and violent death of her sister, Lorri is of course dealing with her fear of losing her family.  Working through this, trusting that she has no control in such things, is a steady theme throughout this novel.

Other great points of this book are

  • The underlying romance between Riggs and Lorri is of course a great reason to read it.  You want them to get together.  You can’t help it.

  • The historical references were as reliable as possible considering this is a work of fiction.  As usual, Ms. Wick does her research, and does it well.

  • I like how she brings back some slight references to another series of hers, The Californians.  Those were the first books I read by her, and it was nice to see those names again.  You kind of hoped to get some more references beyond the names, but still, it was nice.
Overall, this is a great novel, and I really enjoyed it.  I highly recommend this novel, and any other by Ms. Wick.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Description:

Mackenzie and Amy were best friends. Until Amy was brutally murdered.

Since then, Mac’s life has been turned upside down. She is being haunted by Amy in her dreams, and an extremist group called the Trackers has come to Mac’s hometown of Hemlock to hunt down Amy’s killer: A white werewolf.

Lupine syndrome—also known as the werewolf virus—is on the rise across the country. Many of the infected try to hide their symptoms, but bloodlust is not easy to control.

Wanting desperately to put an end to her nightmares, Mac decides to investigate Amy’s murder herself. She discovers secrets lurking in the shadows of Hemlock, secrets about Amy’s boyfriend, Jason, her good pal Kyle, and especially her late best friend. Mac is thrown into a maelstrom of violence and betrayal that puts her life at risk.

Kathleen Peacock’s thrilling novel is the first in the Hemlock trilogy, a spellbinding urban fantasy series filled with provocative questions about prejudice, trust, lies, and love.

Coming out on May 8, 2012

Why?

  1. I like how this isn't starting out as a happy-go-lucky description.  It is a dark sound novel, which is a nice change for me in what I normally read.
  2. Werewolf novel... How will the author swing it? Hmmm.
  3. I like the cover.  It is beautiful and dark.

What are you waiting for?

Victoria Gardella: Vampire Slayer by Colleen Gleason

Description:

A short story introducing readers to the Gardella Vampire Chronicles.

Join Victoria as she navigates her way through balls and Society even as she works to rid the world of dangerous, bloodthirsty vampires.

For those who are familiar with the series, this story would have appeared halfway through The Rest Falls Away.

My Review:

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This short story is an introduction to the Gardella Vampire Chronicles (though, from what I understand, this comes into play after the first novel of the Gardella Vampire Chronicles).   Personally, I think this introduction was a great way to want to pull in readers.

It has several things that really drag in a read, even though it is a short story.
·         Victoria is an interesting character as she is torn between the world of the ton and the world as a Venator (aka Vampire slayer).  Like any “superhero”, which is kind of what it is like, she has to juggle her public life with her private life.  It is almost to the point that it is funny in this short story.
·         The appearance of a love “quadrangle” between the 3 men and Victoria is kind of funny.
·         A good introduction to what it means to be a Venator, and what vampires are like.  It actually appears that there will be no such thing as a “good” vampire in this series, but I’ll have to read the rest of the series to confirm that.
·         Finally, you can’t beat a paranormal historical short story or novel that actually does a good job of being actually semi historically correct.  I mean it can’t be completely historically correct because of the paranormal aspects, but it was a good job on Ms. Gleason’s part.  It was a bit refreshing.

The funniest part of the whole thing though was the embarrassment of Victoria walking in on her mother and her mother’s beau.  I can’t think of anything worse or more embarrassing.

Overall, this was a good short story, and was very entertaining.  I recommend this short story, and look forward to reading more by Ms. Gleason.

A Kiss in Time by Alex Flinn

Description:

Talia fell under a spell...Jack broke the curse.

I was told to beware the accursed spindle, but it was so enchanting, so hypnotic...

I was looking for a little adventure the day I ditched my tour group. But finding a comatose town, with a hot-looking chick asleep in it, was so not what I had in mind.

I awakened in the same place but in another time—to a stranger's soft kiss.

I couldn't help kissing her. Sometimes you just have to kiss someone. I didn't know this would happen.

Now I am in dire trouble because my father, the king, says I have brought ruin upon our country. I have no choice but to run away with this commoner!

Now I'm stuck with a bratty princess and a trunk full of her jewels...The good news: My parents will freak!

Think you have dating issues? Try locking lips with a snoozing stunner who turns out to be 316 years old. Can a kiss transcend all—even time?

My Review:

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Talia is a beautiful princess that has been told over and over again to avoid spindles.  Unfortunately she didn’t.  Because of this failure to follow her parents warning, she ends up waking up (with her entire country) 300 years later by Jack’s kiss.  Jack is just an American that ran off from his tour group to explore Europe’s beaches.  Instead he got lost and woke up a 316 year old princess, who then decides to run away with him.

So this cute retelling of Sleeping Beauty is good, but I still prefer Beastly to this book.  It wasn’t that this was a bad story, but I think the movement of this story was a bit different than Beastly.  But, overall, it is a good story.
First, there are some great character developments in this story.  Talia is a spoiled rotten princess whose only instructions are not to touch a spindle.  I loved the character development of Talia.  She goes from being a spoiled rotten to someone who cares for others and are willing to make sacrifices for others.

I think I liked Jack the most though.  He finally developed the courage to tell his dad what he wanted.  He also realizes what he really wants in a girlfriend, and is willing to face the trials to win her back and to even save her.
I did love the spin that Ms. Flinn put in this story.  We all know the story of Sleeping Beauty, but the actual characters, the circumstances that caused it and the resolution that occurred are things that we might never have thought of.  I know I liked how it turned out when Talia wakes up 300 years later.  The adjustment is amazing.

The only real reason I didn’t enjoy this book as much was because of how slow it moved.  I honestly felt at times that I was working through molasses rather than a good book.

Overall, this is a good book, and I do recommend it.

Bewitching Blog Tours: Bloodstorm by Amber Kallyn

Bloodstorm
Heart of a Vampire Book 1

Description:

When duty forces a shaman to stop a vampire from her revenge, love doesn’t just burn... it bites.

For two hundred years, Niki DeVeraux has been tracking the monster who murdered her family and made her a vampire. She finally catches up to him in a small Arizona town, only to face more than she bargained for. Amid an imperious vampire King, a shaky truce between the local clan and shifter pack, and a too-sexy sheriff who makes her remember she’s still a woman, Niki’s single-minded purpose is threatened for the first time since her turning.

Between his duties as Keeper of the peace for the Magic Council and heir to his tribe’s shamanistic magic, Sheriff Shane Spencer’s job is to protect humanity and stop the friction between the local Arcaine races before it turns into an all out blood war. To make matters worse, there’s an irresistible rouge vampire in town enflaming his senses.

When wolves start turning up dead, the tension between the paranormal races grows and suspicion falls on Niki. Shane knows she’s not to blame, and it has nothing to do with the primal urges she stirs within him. Working together, they must find a way to stop the hostilities from going over the edge. Trouble is, the desires raging between Niki and Shane might prove more dangerous than the surrounding threats.

Excerpt:

Chapter One

As Shane Spencer finished the last of his beer, his deputy, Chase Campton, strode by, slapping him on the back.
“Another re-election year well done, Sheriff.”
The small crowd in the bar cheered and the waitress, Rae, slipped another bottle onto his corner table.
Shane tipped his cowboy hat politely and plastered on a fake smile, unable to join in the spirit. All day, something dark had been hanging over the town. Not that anyone else sensed it. He needed to go to his childhood home. On the edge of town, the house sat at the borderline of the Apache reservation and Moss Creek.
His father, head shaman and seer, would know what the signs meant. Once again, doubt crept up inside Shane. How did the Fates pass over the eldest in their family and choose him as their father’s successor? It had never before happened in their tribe’s history.
He nursed the beer, deep in thought.
The door banged open, a cold autumn breeze swirled the smoky air. A woman followed it in, stopping just inside the bar. The air vibrated with unseen power. Even the deepest shadows shivered. Everyone in the bar fell silent, turning as one to look her way.
She held her head high, long black hair curling over her shoulders like silk. Her bright green gaze scanned the tables. She passed over Shane without pause, only to snap back to him.
Magic filled the room and the hair on his forearms rose. The other people in the bar were forgotten. Only the two of them existed.
His heartbeat slowed, skipped a beat, sped up like a race horse barreling down the track.
The doorframe towered over her slight form. Yet her body was ripe, lush with curves. The tight blue jeans emphasized her hips, the narrowness of her waist. And the sleeveless white tank showed her breasts off to perfection.
He swallowed, though his mouth was dry.
Her eyes widened and even over the distance of the room, he heard her soft, feminine gasp. Palms slick, he shakily set the bottle back on the table.
His blood screamed primitive urges... demanding he drag her off to his cave.
It wasn’t like him.
Women, even the most beautiful, had never affected him this way. He’d met with the rich and beautiful, models and actresses galore during his time in the city. Gathering the remaining shreds of his willpower, he closed his eyes calling on the magic of his ancestors. The spirits of the earth responded and power surged through him. Magic raised the hairs on his arms and the back of his neck as the whispers of the spirits of the nearby forest filled him. Ignoring it to concentrate on what was here and now, he reopened his eyes. Colorful hues surrounded everyone in the bar.
Her aura struck him like a punch to the gut. A deep maroon, with flecks of black, revealed exactly what she was.
Vampire.
And not local.
He blinked again, letting the sight fade.
The woman finally looked away and took another step into the bar. As quickly as it had hit, the power surging through the room dissipated. People once more talked and laughed, raising their glasses in toasts.
What the hell kind of vampire was she, to cause such a raging lust?
The woman strode to the bar, her glare shouting ‘Don’t mess with me’. Though she didn’t look old enough to drink, let alone be in a bar in the first place, the bartender immediately poured her a shot of whiskey.
Shane would be talking to Henry about it later.
First, he needed to figure out what this vampire was doing in Moss Creek. Sure, the small mountain town was a hub of paranormal activity, with the local vampire clan and the shifter pack taking advantage of the surrounding nature. But rogues generally tended to stay out of places dominated by orderly clans, knowing the structure and politics were handed down by the Magic Council.
And the Council didn’t like Rogues.
Cupping the shot glass in her hands, the woman leaned towards Henry before the older man could move away.
Shane tensed in his seat. If she was looking for a meal...
Henry murmured something. The woman nodded, downed her shot and laid some money on the bar before turning and striding out.
Shane tried to relax, but he still yearned for the stranger, to touch her, smell her, nearly as badly as when she’d been staring at him, as if she could see down to his very soul.

About the Author:

One of those rare breeds, Amber Kallyn is an Arizona native who can trace her family's history through six generations in the state. She lives with her sexy husband, and their four very active children. Included in the menagerie are two cats (though there's always room for more) and two dogs. We won't count all the fish. She also writes urban fantasy under the name Higley Browne.

Amber loves the paranormal, from dragons to werewolves to vampires. She's currently at work on her next book, probably running around the house acting out a fight scene with her collection of swords and daggers. Or maybe, wishing she had claws to practice the other fight scenes.

A voracious lover of the written word, Amber found at an early age that she could read fast. Really fast. She devours novels by the day, novellas by the hour, and is always looking to get her hands on more.

The Vampire's Redemption by S.J. Wright

Description:

In the third book of the Undead in Brown County series, Sarah Wood has to deal with the changes in her sister, Katie. She also gets to know someone new in her life who could end up being her salvation. And then there's Michael. He's desperate to keep Sarah safe from his enemies. How far will he go in order to protect her?

My Review:

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

In the third installment of the Undead of Brown County Series, we pick up right where we left off (again).  More people join the story, and there is a definite change occurring in this particular novella.  Just like the second novella, this one is in multiple POVs, but (thankfully) they are clearly labeled so that you know exactly whose POV you are reading.

So there were a few things that I liked.
·         Jackson was a great guy.  Granted, I didn’t really like him at the end of the 2nd novella, by the time you finish the 3rd novella you can’t help but think that he is the most amazing guy in the whole world.  You want him to end up with Sarah.
·         I love the development of Jones and Victoria.  They are both great characters who are in a lot of ways the saving grace of these novellas.  They are both likable, generally good vampires.

So let’s kick off what I didn’t like.
·         Katie -- I didn’t like her in the first two novellas, but I definitely hate her in this book.  The spoiled brat is now just plain evil and gullibly evil at that. Now, this might not be her fault, but it didn’t make me want to keep her alive.  I personally might have been able to stake her.  Yep, that is how much I disliked her.  I’d stake her
·         Sarah is a whore.  It has now officially been established.  In less than 2 books, she has screwed Alex, Michael, and is playing with Jackson.  Yep, giant whore, and she only feels a little bit guilty.  What?  I mean, if she cares so much for these men, what she is doing isn’t working.
·         Michael is an ass.  He knows when he goes to talk to Sarah what she would do. He is actually hoping for it…  WTH!  He plays her, and that is not the kind of man (human or vampire) that I find myself cheering for.

I think in some ways, this series of novellas could have easily been made into one novel.  I think it would have made it more palatable if it had been a novel instead of broken into multiple novellas.  Best example of this is because the end of this book would be better for a chapter or section ending than an actual book ending.

Overall, this was a decent novella, but it definitely was not my favorite, and I hope that Ms. Wright comes up with a better 4th novella to resolve some things that have not been resolved, and at least help me like the rest of her characters that she suddenly has me turning against.

Happy Reading!

Excerpt:

FROM CHAPTER TWO

I ordered Seth to wait in the car and slowly made my way up the dirt path in the direction of what I had hoped was Sebastian’s residence. The longer I walked, the darker and more daunting the clouds above became. Finally, with a booming crash of thunder, the sky tore open, releasing a fresh downpour of cool rain. This time it was faster and heavier, pummeling against Hannah’s note and drenching her small, neat writing. I considered turning back and meeting with Sebastian another time, but my curiosity got the best of me.
I examined Hannah’s note, squinting to make out some of the smudged words.
Sebastian York is a twenty-one year-old Scorpio. He has gorgeous light gray eyes, the color of sparkling glaciers. His midnight-black hair is slightly curly and just long enough to make you daydream about running your fingers through his locks. He’s super tall and really, really hot. Just try to peel your eyes away from all those lean muscles! Yum! He’s brooding, mysterious, strong, and self-deprecating (or at least he seems like the type)—the perfect vampire!
I had to stop myself from reading the rest. Hannah’s report on Sebastian was a little over-the-top for my taste. Not to mention, much too unbelievable. I scrunched up the soaked paper and tucked it into the pocket of my jeans. I smiled to myself, thinking that the bubbly redhead had a promising career ahead of her as a writer of cheesy romance novels.
The hike through the forest led to a secluded clearing. The trees parted, revealing a striking building more akin to a grand mansion, than a house in the woods. While made in the same style as the buildings in town, the three-storey structure had a stately, regal air about it. Clad in white stone with Grecian temple-inspired columns towering across its entire façade, it very much resembled the majestic inn on the grounds of the Angel Creek Park.
The driveway finally came to an end and I found myself next to a luxury antique car. Its cherry-red hood was propped wide open, so it took a moment before I noticed that there was a figure tinkering with the machinery underneath. He wore a pair of loose, black pants, the muscles on his bare back flexing as he strained to tighten something with a metal wrench.
Hannah’s words flashed through my mind as I stood frozen in place, observing Sebastian’s profile. My gaze traveled along his tall, lean body, to his face, gliding over his sharp angular jaw and high cheekbones, and, finally, finding a resting place on his dark locks. Embarrassed by my unexpected attraction to the vampire in front of me, I sharply looked away, thankful for the cooling sensation of the wet raindrops against my skin.
Suddenly, Sebastian sensed my presence. His entire body tensed as he spun around, the wrench firmly grasped in his hand, ready and poised for an attack. The moment his eyes fixed on me, he froze, a look of sheer terror seizing his face. The metal tool fell out of his hand, hitting the cobblestone with a loud clank. The noise seemed to break the spell he was under. As his gaze connected with mine, the look of horror that came over him just moments before, immediately vanished.
“Sebastian?” I asked breathlessly, unnerved by his startling reaction.
He didn’t reply. Instead, he continued to examine every inch of me with his cool, gray eyes. My entire body blazed under his scrutinizing stare, but despite the uneasiness, I couldn’t bring myself to look away from him. The strong wind frantically tugged at my hair, as if trying to snap me out of my trance. In spite of nature’s best efforts, I simply stood there, locked in an unnerving staring contest with the mysterious vampire. A deafening clap of thunder shook the earth, causing me to jump, and startling Sebastian back to his senses.
“Who wants to know?” he finally responded. There was a sharp edge to his smooth voice.
“My name is Dawn,” I said, attempting a smile. “I’m here on an assignment from the Vampire President to train the new guardians of Angel Creek. Since you’re one of the five vampire residents, I thought you’d want to know about the mission and take part—” I paused abruptly, distracted by the angry scowl forming across his face.
Another earsplitting roar of thunder sounded before he spoke. “Not interested.” he said curtly, his eyes still intent on me. He was boldly exploring my face, his gaze slowly traveling down my body.
“Dawn, did you say?” he asked curiously, his voice a little less brisk.
I nodded, crossing my arms in a self-conscious effort to shield myself from his gaze. “So can we count you in?” I asked hopefully.
“No.”
“What do you mean no?” I asked in disbelief. I was quickly becoming annoyed with the shirtless, ill-mannered vampire.
“No. Nope. Not interested. Is that clear enough for you?”
“Really?”
“Yes, really—no.” He turned away, waving his hand in my direction as if to let me know I was dismissed.
“Why?” I asked, stretching out to grab his arm. Thankfully, he had moved just before I could reach him, as mid-grab, I realized that touching Sebastian was a bold move that I had not fully thought out.
He turned around to face me, the feverish look in his eyes causing me to take a slight step back. “I don’t really embrace this whole vampire fad. I’m not interested in anything related to vampires, being a vampire or serving the Vampire President. Got it?”
“What about your obligation to protect humans?” I questioned.
“I’m not interested in humans either, not even the sad, vulnerable ones so many vampire idiots fall for. You could say, I'm only interested in myself.” He smirked, his tone once again reaching sub-zero temperatures. “So, if you wouldn’t mind leaving, I’d love to get back to work.”
“But, but…you can’t do that. When I tell the President that you’re here, he’ll order you to join the group.” I was grasping at straws.
All of a sudden, Sebastian charged toward me, thrusting his face into mine. He was so close our noses almost touched. As I raised my eyes to meet his, the raindrops from his glistening locks dripped onto my forehead. I resisted the temptation to blink as droplets of water fell onto my eyelashes, not wanting to show him any weakness.
“For the past century I’ve been doing exactly what I want, when I want. I don’t owe anything to any human or vampire—especially not the President. Now, leave before I make you leave!” he said through clenched teeth.
Fine!” I yelled, pressing my fists tightly against my legs in an effort to prevent myself from striking him. “But, just so you know, you’re a really sucky vampire.” I mentally kicked myself for the lame retort, also chastising myself for having wanted this aggravating snob to join the group.
“Please don’t come around here anymore.” With those final words, Sebastian stormed off into the house, slamming the heavy door behind him. I was left alone on the wet driveway; feeling confused, angry, and somewhat excited by our meeting.

That evening, nestled in the small, cozy cottage in the depths of the Angel Creek forest, I glumly surveyed the vampires gathered around the dining room table. Hunter was resting his head on the linen tablecloth, struggling to stay awake. Every so often, he would succeed in lifting his heavy lids and focusing his eyes on me, only to instantly retreat into his intoxicated coma. Sophie sat to Hunter’s right, her forehead scrunched tightly as she squinted at the tiny print of her historical fiction novel. Her pupils moved at lightning speed as her eyes traversed the pages of the book, hungrily devouring the story. Across from them, Brooke was polishing her nails with a sharp, pink file. She paused after each stroke to carefully inspect her nails and ensure that she was creating the perfect shape. Seth sat at the foot of the table, a large head of garlic in his hand. He peeled off a clove and popped it into his mouth, wincing as the bitter flavor reached his taste buds. All the while, he shot dirty looks in Brooke’s direction.
Drawing in a deep, calming breath, I launched into a short speech I had prepared earlier in the day. “Congratulations new vampire recruits! The four of you are now the official guardians of Angel Creek. This is both a great honor and an important task. Are you ready to band together and work with me?” I asked with as much excitement as I could muster.
“Hmm?” Hunter murmured, raising his head.
“Y-Yes.” Sophie whispered.
“Okay,” Brooke said. “But it better make me super popular.”
Seth narrowed his eyes at Brooke. “As long as I don’t have to work too closely with her.”
It was the best I was going to get, I realized.
“Tomorrow morning we begin our train—” Before I had a chance to finish my sentence, a sudden blur of movement in the woods caught my attention. I only saw it for a split second, but it was enough to convince me that someone was lurking outside. Someone had found our secret location.
Not wanting to panic the recruits, I casually made my way to one of the dining room windows. Wiping away layers of dust that clouded the glass pane, I pressed my forehead against its cool surface, scanning the horizon for the origin of the activity. It was difficult to make out through the thick sheets of rain, but right at the edge of the forest, concealed by the shadowy trees, stood a tall, dark silhouette. From its frame alone, I could not tell if it belonged to a human, a vampire, or some other being altogether. I was only sure of one thing—it was watching us. I rushed outside to investigate, but by the time I had reached its hiding spot, the stranger had vanished into the darkness.

Review:

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Imagine a world where after all the vampire hype started, all the vampires came out of the “coffin” so to speak… And not in the “True Blood” kind of way either.  This cute YA novel is set exactly like that.  All the vampires have come out of the coffin (so to speak).  They are joining in with moving stars, working with their own government run by the Vampire President, and everyone is going crazy with excitement.  Dawn, the President’s beautiful daughter, has been protected from the world and when she if finally given her first mission she is so excited she doesn’t care what the mission is.  Funny thing is, it is not the easiest job in the world.  She has to “revamp” 4 very unvampire-like vampires, and turn them into strong Guardian vampires.  What no one knows is that the past is coming back to haunt her and the little town she is in.

Oh, my goodness, this was a great book!  Now, I love my YA vamp books for one of 2 reasons:  1) They are corny and no-brainers that don’t require too much attention or 2) just for the plain fun of it.  Well, this book doesn’t fall into category #1, but it sure does fall into category #2.

I loved book so much for several reasons.  I loved the spin that Ms. Adams gave.  A lot of vampire YA books are almost seemed to be in a set pattern or mold, but I didn’t see a pattern with this book.  It was refreshing spin on the vampire myth, with surprising twists.  There were at least 2 that caught me completely by surprise, and I absolutely loved it!

I really liked Dawn as a character.  She is trying to find her place in the world, trying to show that she is an adult to her father and trying to find herself.  When she discovers things about her family’s past, she is unsure how to proceed, who to trust, and what to do.  The struggles she deals with, though circumstance could be different, are similar to what we as young adults (or even adults) have to deal with and figure out.

Oh, and there was definitely a fun love triangle.  Ethan and Sebastian = YUMMY!  One tall, dark and handsome brooding vampire and one cute, blonde human make for a fun story line.  I easily picked which one I wanted Dawn to pick (and boy was I right on which one she should pick!), but there is still that struggle on which one is right for her.

Best part of the whole book though:  The werewolves.  That whole scene and description had me laughing so hard I almost chocked.  Definitely not what I thought werewolves would look like, and that was definitely refreshing!

Other great perks of this book:  I love the play on the title and what happens in the book.  There is really a lot of “revamp”ing and I liked how the author played with that.  I think that the historical reference that was mentioned is pleasantly and believably intertwined to the plot of the story (No real hints, but think Dolly in 1996), and I can remember this stuff being such a big deal as a teen.  Then there was the garlic twist that I absolutely love… It really makes me want garlic bread right now.  And the history of how each of the four new vampires were turned was pretty great.  Brook’s was the funniest just because of the irony of it all (though personally, I wouldn’t want to be stuck as a 17 for life/unlife), plus the other stories of other vamps were pretty cool!

The only thing confusing me were the prologue and the flash backs.  It made me think one thing, but it was completely different.  It only slightly confused me until Alastair cleared it up with the explanation ¾ of the way through the book.

One question that I’m still dying to know the answer to, is about the concept of the Born and the Made, and would the normal Born/Made rules apply to Dawn and Sebastian?  Can’t really be more specific as it might give away important details of the book, but it does make me wonder.  Hmmm, sounds like a great thing to figure out in the next books.

Overall, I think this is a great book, and I highly recommend it.  I can’t wait to see what Ms. Adams is going to be doing next.

Happy Reading!
