Question: What is your biggest pet peeve when it comes to books? Maybe you don't like love triangles or thin plots? Tell us about it!

I don't have many pet peeves about books, BUT my biggest pet peeve is with series.  Lets face it, I know it is hard sometimes to keep things straight in a series, but when authors start changing how things work mid-way through a series (i.e. the vampires are gorgeous and living, not dead, and could marry anyone they want and then NOT EVEN half way through the series they start talking about life mates and how there is only one for you in the world.  Really? What changed?) or they keep changing things that are minor details, but they are minor enough that they keep coming up (like midway through a novel the main "god" character's name gets changed... What?).  For me those things are like the Egyptians with wrist watches in the Ten Commandments.  It doesn't jive.

So what is your pet peeve?

Happy Reading!

  1. Sometimes it is so hard for authors to remain true to their own story when they write sequels. And as a reader you end up disappointed. Did they actually change a name midway through a book?? :O

  2. Series really can be tricky. If an author is dragging on their story just to squeeze out another few books its ruins the story. Or if they change things up midway through like you explained it confuses the heck out of me.

  3. Juli, yes, the author named the character one thing at the beginning of the book and changed it midway. I think she had one named picked originally, and then decided she liked a different one as she continued to write. She later fixed it in the next book that he had a first and middle name... but still.
Kristan, you are right about a series being tricky, but I don't like getting so confused that I get a headache. We can be confused together on those types of series!

  4. Wow! I am surprised an editor somewhere didn't catch that. I wouldn't like that kind of change either, but I don't think I have read anything from a series like that.

  6. Those can be annoying! Although I don't think I've come across too many details that change over time. Of course I read so many books, some may slip by me. Series can be an issue, but for the most part I love the ones I read, they tend to do the storyline right. Others may drag, but I'm too invested in them and they are so close to ending I don't want to stop.

  7. I have to say this.......
I am so tired of the draw toward vampires, paranormal, etc.
And in books in general, I do not enjoy finding spelling errors!! (But, that is a pet peeve of mine in anything written - not just in books)!

Whew!! Glad I got that out....
    Thank you for this space!

  8. For that as I forget everything esealy it doesn't really bother me because I don't see it. If I know it it will upset me but otherwise it's not a problem.
