Q: Summer Break is upon us! What would be the perfect vacation spot for you to catch up on your reading & relax?

The perfect place for me would be in a beautiful cabin in the mountains of the middle of nowhere.  With nothing but my books, a microwave, stove and fridge, I'd happily spend my time reading and eating (maybe a few crafts as well, but lets not count on it!)

Where would you go?

My Review:

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Let me first say how much I love this book.  I first read this book when I was in 8th grade.  I read it so much that the cover and pages fell apart.  Since then I still read this book over again, especially if there are major changes in my life.  So because I love this book so much, let me tell you why.

This book is set in an earth that has lost the sun.  It still exists, but because of pollution, and maybe even a natural disaster or two, the cloud cover prevents any sunlight from reaching the earth.  This of course causes another ice age.  In the process of this, the world divides into two groups: The Chosen and the Quelled.  The Chosen are the highest of people, considered to be the Chosen of God. The Quelled are people marked with brands and forced to work in mines and to toil in other ways for the Chosen.  In this dystopian society, one Quelled called Elsha is raised to a postion that no Quelled would have ever dreamed of: She became the Handmaiden to the Firelord.

I love this story because it tells a story of hopes and dreams, and of love.  Elsha has dreams of a better life, a life where she can be free of the curse of being Quelled, of being able to be free.  She dreams of how the earth might have been, what the world would be like with sunshine and green plants.  It is a story of love between Elsha and the fire stones, Elsha and the Firelord, and Elsha and the men who become so important in her life.

Throughout this whole story, you can’t help but want it all to work out.  I cheered her through her trials, and cried as she did through her losses.  Even though I have never experienced what she has, I can’t help but feel a connection.

I think what made this book the best was that there was a semi-resolution.  Everything wasn’t completely fixed, but it was on its way.  There is no hope for a second book, there is no need.  It ends with the hope of the unknown, just like with life.

I highly recommend this book.

Waiting on Wednesday: Dark Companion by Marta Acosta

Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.
This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

.

Description:

When foster teen Jane Williams is invited to attend elite Birch Grove Academy for Girls and escape her violent urban neighborhood, she thinks the offer is too good to be true. She's even offered her own living quarters, the groundskeeper's cottage in the center of the birch grove.

Something's not quite right about the school -- or is it Jane? She thinks she sees things in the birch grove at night. She's also beginning to suspect that the elegant headmistress and her sons are hiding secrets. Lucky is the gorgeous, golden son who is especially attentive to Jane, and Jack is the sardonic puzzling brother.

The school with its talented teachers and bright students is a dream for a science and math geek like Jane. She also loves her new friends, including hilarious poetry-spouting rich girl, Mary Violet. But the longer Jane stays at Birch Grove, the more questions she has about the disappearance of another scholarship girl and a missing faculty member.

Jane discovers one secret about Birch Grove, which only leads to more mysteries. What is she willing to sacrifice in order to stay at this school...and be bound to Birch Grove forever?

Coming out on July 3, 2012

Why?

  1. This makes me wonder what it is that wanders the grove.  I am assuming this is fantasy or paranormal, but the description leaves you wondering what it is.
  2. Potential love triangle suggested... And that is always fun.
  3. The cover is beautiful... Almost like a goddess walking among her subjects.

What are you waiting for?

Bewitching Blog Tour Review: Perpetual Light by Jordan K. Rose

Description:

Perpetual Light
By Jordan K Rose
Fate is cruel. Especially when the one you’ve sworn to love for all eternity, the very soul who changed your destiny is the last person you should trust.

After more than three hundred years of running, Lucia Dicomano must make a choice.

Forced to take her place as a Pharo of Redemption, the divine slayer needs to master her forgotten powers. Lucia turns to Vittorio, the one vampire she’s failed to deliver from eternal damnation. But overcoming smoldering remnants of love, lust and anger aren’t their only obstacles.

Samuel, who may know Lucia better than she knows herself, hunts her with a fervor stoked by a thousand years of vengeful hatred. His plan—capture and enslave the weakened Pharo then take control of her elusive power.

Can Lucia trust Vittorio long enough to reclaim her powers? Or will she have no choice but to kill him and battle Samuel alone?

Excerpt:

Prologue

“L’amore e dolcissima corrispondenza degli spiriti, che di due anime ne compone una sola.”
~Guerrazzi
Love is the sweetest joining of spirits, when two souls become as one.

April 11, 1667
The Abyss hovered, waiting to take me.
More time, I need more time. He’s coming.
The raspy sounds of my own breathing filled my ears. With each jagged gasp, pain shot through my body straight to my core.
Pressure, cold and heavy, weighed on me. The Abyss called.
Not yet.
The next breath held the scent of sun-kissed grapevines, and I knew he was near.
“No. God, no.” He sobbed as he lifted me into his arms. “Lucia.”
My eyes opened.
Vittorio.
He was changed. His skin, tanned from years in the vineyard, was now gray, and deep, dark grooves circled his eyes. Gone were the beautiful green and gold flecks of his hazel irises, replaced with the crimson glow of one who walked in shadows.
He needed me.
The Abyss stretched forward, reaching for me, its frigid tendrils swirling as souls trapped within its depths screamed for salvation. Cold burns whipped across my aura as the angry void attempted to claim me.
No. Not yet. I concentrated on Vittorio, steeling myself against my bitter destiny. Another moment with him was all I needed.
Gazing into his eyes, I found his trembling soul, hidden within him. Without hesitating my power wrapped around him, hiding his presence from The Abyss.
Tortured and terrified, he stared back at me, unmoving, his heart hammering in his chest.
Calm, my love.
A scream pierced the air. The Abyss grew impatient.
My very essence quaked as the angry void surrounded me. But I called on my powers and captured his soul, holding it in the warmth of eternity, caressing it, loving him.
Drink from me. Drink and take my gift. Keep me with you forever. It was all I could offer, the only way I knew to keep him safe, to keep us together.
He shook his head. “I don’t want to hurt you, cuore mio.” A single red-tinged tear rolled down his cheek.
No, you cannot hurt me. I will give you strength. I will give you the light you need. Drink.
I lifted my chin and pulled him to my neck, muffling his sobs against my skin.
His fangs penetrated my flesh, and he drank.
And The Abyss howled at my return.

My Review:

I actually don’t know how I feel about this book.  It was an interesting book, I will say that. I am just still on the fence about this book.

I think one of the reasons that I don’t really know what I think about this book is based on my preconceived notions on this book based on the synopsis.  I feel that the synopsis was not a good synopsis, as the actual story was different from what the synopsis lead me to believe.  I thought this book was of a woman who had always known what she was, and what her job was, not a woman who keeps getting reincarnated while the one that she truly loves is eternally stuck as a vampire.  This did confuse me a bit.  I’m not big on books having to do with reincarnation (of any kind) as they seem a bit too circular and even haphazard.  And so it seemed with this one.  As with most reincarnation books, the past life/lives keep popping up, and for me they were a bit confusing as they are described with no warning of which time period you are reading: Present or Past.  Sometimes you would start a new chapter, and not even know what time period it was in.

I did like Ms. Rose’s spin on the vampire mythology.  The fact that the vampires still have heart beats, still breath, and generally (if they are feeding like they should) look normal was refreshing.  I also like the descriptions of the scents related to the vampires.  Some scents would automatically set you at ease with them.  Others would not.

I thought the romance between Lucia and Vittorio was both beautiful and heartbreaking.  Throughout the book you have little hope about it, but you still secretly want them to succeed.

Overall, I think this book was written well, but it wasn’t what I really thought it was going to be.  My best recommendation:  Read it yourself and let me know what you think about it!

My Review:

Blood Rites by Quinn Loftis
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

So this book was okay for me.  I must say that after the first book, Prince of Wolves, I was quite disappointed with this book.
First, there was too much angst for my taste, and worse, it was both real and imaginary angst for the characters.  To add to the angst, the slow flip flop of time and POV made it easy to get confused or bored with the first couple of chapters.
There was the hard subject of forced intimacy in this book.  It wasn’t rape, but it was the forcing of blood upon someone.  It would be the closest thing to rape in the werewolf community, and the heart ache was understandable.  The only thing that I found hard was how quickly the character got over it.  It seemed to easy, really, especially if it is suppose to be more intimate than sex.
I will admit that I LOVED the ending of this book.  It was honestly the best part of this book.  The resolution for Jacque and Fane was great, but the cliffhanger for Jen kindly and quickly helped to lead up to the third book in this series.
I really did enjoy the growing relationship between Dec and Jen, which made for an interesting love/hate storyline.  It was definitely entertaining.
Overall, it was an okay book, but it wasn’t my favorite.  I’m hoping that the next book will be better.

Prince of Wolves by Quinn Loftis

Description:

Jaque Pierce was just an ordinary 17 year old girl getting ready to start her senior year in high school in Coldspring, Texas. When a mysterious foreign exchange student from Romania moves in across the street, Jacque and her two best friends, Sally and Jen, don't realize the last two weeks of their summer was going to get a lot more interesting. From the moment Jacque sets eyes on Fane she feels an instant connection, a pull like a moth to a flame. Little does she know that the flame she is drawn to is actually a Canis lupis, werewolf, and she just happens to be his mate; the other half of his soul. The problem is Fane is not the only wolf in Coldspring, Texas. Just as Fane and Jacque are getting to know each other, another wolf steps out to try and claim Jacque as his mate. Fane will now have to fight for the right to complete the mating bond, something that is his right by birth but is being denied him by a crazed Alpha. Will the love Fane has for Jacque be enough to give him the strength to defeat his enemy, will Jacque accept that she is Fane's mate and complete the bond between them?

My Review:

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

So this was a great little book, especially if you like werewolves, romance, and just a bit of mystery mixed with drama.
This book had some great characters.  I thought Fane was a great character.  He is a gentleman, which for me automatically make him a more appealing character.  Jacque is very likable, and she kind of reminds me of myself in my teen years (without my werewolf soul mate :P).  Jen and Sally are absolutely hilarious!  They definitely keep the story interesting with their lingo, and commentary on the events going on in the book.  My only issue seems to be how bad a nympho Jen behaves.  The fact that her friends call her a nympho is bad.
Story wise, this was a good book.  I must say that it was a bit refreshing not to have a “Twilight” model book. I thought it was a great premise, and was on the edge of my seat towards the end.  I must admit that it was amazing towards the end.
I really only had 2 problems through this whole novel.  First, the author doesn’t know how to spell y’all.  Throughout the whole book, she spells it “ya’ll”, which is incorrect.  And as a Southern, I appreciate when an author will spell it correctly.
My second issue with this book was something more along the lines of format.  It was primarily caused because I had a hard time with the Romanian words.  The format I had, didn’t handle the accents for most of the words (putting ? in place of the accents.  Pretty much made it look like gibberish!), plus it would have been helpful if the Romanian had been in italics.  Also, sometimes it would have been helpful to have a glossary for both the common Romanian words and the terms of endearments used throughout the book.
Overall, it was a good book, and I’m looking forward to reading more by Ms. Loftis.
