This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Description:
Does one need four fully grown foxgloves for decorating a dinner table for six guests? Or is it six foxgloves to kill four fully grown guests?

Sophronia's first year at Mademoiselle Geraldine's Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality has certainly been rousing! For one thing, finishing school is training her to be a spy (won't Mumsy be surprised?). Furthermore, Sophronia got mixed up in an intrigue over a stolen device and had a cheese pie thrown at her in a most horrid display of poor manners.

Now, as she sneaks around the dirigible school, eavesdropping on the teachers' quarters and making clandestine climbs to the ship's boiler room, she learns that there may be more to a school trip to London than is apparent at first. A conspiracy is afoot--one with dire implications for both supernaturals and humans. Sophronia must rely on her training to discover who is behind the dangerous plot-and survive the London Season with a full dance card.

In this sequel to bestselling author Gail Carriger's YA debut Etiquette & Espionage, class is back in session with more petticoats and poison, tea trays and treason. Gail's distinctive voice, signature humor, and lush steampunk setting are sure to be the height of fashion this season.

Friday Fun With Mary Evelyn

Friday Fun is where readers from ages 5 to 16 let us know what they are reading and why they loved (or hated) what they read.

Today we have Mary Evelyn reviewing :

The Dark Unwinding (The Dark Unwinding, #1)
The Dark Unwinding by Sharon Cameron

Description:

When Katharine Tulman’s inheritance is called into question by the rumor that her eccentric uncle is squandering away the family fortune, she is sent to his estate to have him committed to an asylum. But instead of a lunatic, Katharine discovers a genius inventor with his own set of rules, who employs a village of nine hundred people rescued from the workhouses of London.

Katharine is now torn between protecting her own inheritance and preserving the peculiar community she grows to care for deeply. And her choices are made even more complicated by a handsome apprentice, a secretive student, and fears for her own sanity.

As the mysteries of the estate begin to unravel, it is clear that not only is her uncle’s world at stake, but also the state of England as Katharine knows it.

Review:

Why did you pick this book out?
This book was steam punk ( if you have read my review for
Etiquette and Espionage, you will understand why) and was full of difficult problems that I knew would leave my mind wandering.

What did you like about this book?
Katherine is dealing with critical situations that could cause a plethora of negative outcomes. It left me on edge. Waiting for the next thought that could be dire.

What did you not like about this book?
I was confused about who Robert was.

Would you tell other people to read this book?
Defiantly. It was a thrilling piece, full of vivid details.

Who was your favorite character? Why?
Lane. He has an unpredictable temper, but is caring and does what is best.

Who is your least favorite character? Why?
Aunt Alice. She is a selfish woman who despises the thought of Katherine. She is so involved with her finances that she neglects the care of anything and everything else.

Bound by Night by Larissa Ione

Description:

A WOMAN OUT FOR BLOOD
Nicole Martin was only eight years old when the vampire slaves rose up in rebellion and killed her family. Now she devotes her life to finding a vaccine against vampirism, hoping to wipe out her memories—along with every bloodsucker on the planet. But there’s one thing she cannot destroy: her searing, undeniable attraction for the one man she should hate and fear the most . . .

A VAMPIRE OUT FOR REVENGE
A member of the renegade vampire MoonBound Clan, Riker is haunted by demons of his own. When he recognizes Nicole and remembers how her family enslaved his loved ones, his heart burns for vengeance. But when he kidnaps Nicole and holds her in a secret lair, his mortal enemy becomes his soul obsession, his greatest temptation, and, perhaps, his only salvation—a hot-blooded lover who could heal him with her touch . . . or bury him forever.

Review:

Bound by Night by Larissa Ione
5 out of 5

OMGoodness!  I loved this book!  I found it to be so much better for me than the Demonica Series by Ms. Ione.

Characters

I think Nicole is a great character.  Traumatized by vampires at a young age, she becomes a strong woman who is working through her fears and the truths that were hidden from her for way too long.

Rikker is struggling with his anger, guilt, and regret.  But boy, does this wounded vampire sound sexy.  When he isn’t burdened with those things, he is a sweet and gentle man that you can’t help but love.

I think though that Myne is my favorite character, and I really want to learn more about him.  I really liked that he was respectful of Rikker’s claim on Nicole, and how he helped Nicole transition.

Everything Else

I really liked this twist to the vampire myth.  Steeped in Native American lore, it was great to get a new tale from a genre that keeps getting the same old stuff.

I also loved the twist and turns of this novel!  Some were not expected, while some were.  But all of it made for a great story.

I think this story is in the near future, but I’m sure that it isn’t too far from the present.  I liked that it wasn’t in the “here and now” kind of story.  It just made it more believable.

I wished that there had been more time, more chapters, because I DID NOT want this book to end.

Overall

Overall, this is a great book, and I can’t wait to read the next one.  I highly recommend.

Waiting on Wednesday: Teardrop by Lauren Kate

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.
This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Description:

Never, ever cry. . . . Eureka Boudreaux’s mother drilled that rule into her daughter years ago. But now her mother is gone, and everywhere Eureka goes he is there: Ander, the tall, pale blond boy who seems to know things he shouldn’t, who tells Eureka she is in grave danger, who comes closer to making her cry than anyone has before.

But Ander doesn’t know Eureka’s darkest secret: ever since her mother drowned in a freak accident, Eureka wishes she were dead, too. She has little left that she cares about, just her oldest friend, Brooks, and a strange inheritance—a locket, a letter, a mysterious stone, and an ancient book no one understands. The book contains a haunting tale about a girl who got her heart broken and cried an entire continent into the sea. Eureka is about to discover that the ancient tale is more than a story, that Ander might be telling the truth . . . and that her life has far darker undercurrents than she ever imagined. From Lauren Kate comes an epic saga of heart-stopping romance, devastating secrets, and dark magic . . . a world where everything you love can be washed away.

Coming out on October 22, 2013

Why?
1.   This sounds like a mythology book.  I am just curious about it.
2.   The book just sounds amazing, honestly.  Something that I need to read.
3.   I am curious about Ander, who he is, and why he follows Eureka.
4.   The cover is pretty cool. Is she water, or is she human, or is she something in between?

Consume by Melissa Darnell

Description:

Tristan Coleman has survived the change from Clann magic user to vampire, much to Savannah Colbert's joy—and despair. By changing the Clann's golden boy and newly elected leader, even to save him from death, she has unleashed a fury of hatred and fear that they cannot escape.

As the Clann and the vampire council go to war, Tristan and Sav face a new threat—a fracturing of the all-consuming bond they share. To fight for peace, they must forge a new trust and risk everything to take down their deadliest enemy, even as they must run for their lives. Soon they will learn that some bonds are stronger than love—and some battles cannot be won without sacrifice.

Consume by Melissa Darnell
5 out of 5

First off, I must say that I LOVE this series!  It is so unique, yet so understandable.  I loved the way the story flows, and the way it feels like a modern fairytale.

Characters

I felt really bad for Savannah, as she dealt with turning Tristan.  It must be hard to remember tons of things while the person you have turned has amnesia.  But then when he finally remembered, and I felt the beginnings of hope for the new vampire couple to have a happy ending.  The only thing that I didn’t like about Savannah is that she carries way too much guilt about things that are not her fault.

Poor Tristan had it rough through these books.  First his dad, and now his mom are gone.  This boy suddenly has gone from having the perfect life to having a life on the run.

I did not like vengeful Tristan.  His desire for revenge made him completely unlikable.  And he isn’t the boy I loved in the first book. I really miss that boy.  But when he finally (and thankfully) figured out that revenge wasn’t for him, he became a man that I could really root for.

I liked how Dylan ended up switching sides.  It wasn’t expected, but it definitely showed growth and a change in his character.

Everything Else

Throughout this book, you are asking yourself a lot of questions:
·         On the brink of a Clann verses Vampire war, you wonder who will win, who will survive, and will the war be prevented?
·         I’m curious about Emily’s child.  How is it draining her powers?  And is there something special about this child or is it a normal dhampir child?

I found it interesting to get to see more of the council.  But I wouldn’t trust them as far as I could throw them.

I love how Tristan and Savannah were able to defeat Mr. Williams, and how Mac proved he was capable of defending his friends.

And can I just say how much I loved Joan (Savannah’s mom) and how she played with Michael at the end… Really, I loved it!

Overall

This was a beautiful conclusion to this series.  And I hate that this series ended, just because I loved the series so much.  But the way everything came together, how Tristan and Savannah got to be part of both the Clann and the Vampire Council, and how Emily became the leader she was meant to be, made this the perfect ending.

Overall, this is an awesome book, an amazing story, and a MUST READ series.  I highly recommend it.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Coming out on October 8th 2013

Why?
1.      So, this sounds like an interesting book.  Kind of almost like a classic fairytale.  It will be interesting to see how fairytale it will be like.
2.      I am looking to expand the authors that I read, so I want to give this author a chance.
3.      The cover looks kind of almost medieval, which is a favorite time of mine.  It would be interesting to see how much so the book will read.
