6 More Days Till It's The End Of The World: A Review from Cana at Place of Reads

Description:

She could save the world—or destroy it.

Sixteen year old Evangeline “Evie” Greene leads a charmed life, until she begins experiencing horrifying hallucinations. When an apocalyptic event decimates her Louisiana hometown, Evie realizes her hallucinations were actually visions of the future—and they’re still happening. Fighting for her life and desperate for answers, she must turn to her wrong-side-of-the-bayou classmate: Jack Deveaux.

But she can’t do either alone.

With his mile-long rap sheet, wicked grin, and bad attitude, Jack is like no boy Evie has ever known. Even though he once scorned her and everything she represented, he agrees to protect Evie on her quest. She knows she can’t totally depend on Jack. If he ever cast that wicked grin her way, could she possibly resist him?

Who can Evie trust?

As Jack and Evie race to find the source of her visions, they meet others who have gotten the same call. An ancient prophesy is being played out, and Evie is not the only one with special powers. A group of twenty-two teens has been chosen to reenact the ultimate battle between good and evil. But it’s not always clear who is on which side…

My Review:

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is one dark, morbid, disturbing book that you might not be able to put down… Yep, it is one of those.  You get disturbed, creeped out, horrified, and saddened, but you can’t put it down because, DAMN IT, you want to see what is going to happen next!

Evie is such a scared, whiney, and possibly insane person.  The fact that she is being driving insane slowing with her visions and dreams, doesn’t make it easier.  Though, once the world ends, she kind of starts to snap out of it and grows a bit of a back bone (which was greatly appreciated… Spineless creatures tend to not survive the end of the world).  But, honestly, she is more naïve than a 5-year-old homeschooler.

Jackson is kind of the anti-hero.  He does a lot of good things, but necessarily in the right way.  He lusts (and I think sometimes even loves) after Evie.  I did enjoy the fact that it was proven that just because it is the end of the world, it does not mean that the hormones stop working and that does add some interesting moments.

Arthur is just plan creeptastic.  He obviously seems to have a mental disorder, and he seems to be a psychopath.  He truly is one of the things that seems to make this book so scary… Scarier than a bagman and the cannibals and slavers.  And it is all because you don’t know what he is going to do to Evie, but you know, whatever it is, it is going to be BAD.

I know that Matthew is the Fool, and that he is important, and that he is special… But I found that he gave me a BIGGER headache than he gave Evie!  Not my favorite character, and several times, I hoped that bagmen, slavers, cannibals or something would get him.  Never a good thing.

I did enjoy the contract between Evie’s and Jackson’s worlds.  I think it shows that even after a disaster that the things like status, popularity, and even enemies and friendships don’t matter, because in the end you all need to come together and rely on each other to survive.

The bagmen seem to be a cross between a vampire, a zombie and a slug.   They crave any liquid (and blood is a liquid), they have little to now brain function, and they are slimey… yuck!  They are frightening to read about, and you have got to wonder what kind of nightmare inspired them for Ms. Cole.

I found the ideas of the tarot cards existing in real life interesting, but I wish that I had a visual (especially since I “read” this book as an audio book).  They were slightly confusing to me because I had little prior knowledge of the tarot cards.  I will say that meeting the actual different Tarot Card Archana was a bit surprising, and not always what I was expecting.  I guess that is always refreshing when an author can still surprise you.

Definitely didn’t see some things coming until it happened.  It was full of shocks, twists, and surprises.  Definitely shocking at some moments.

I was disappointed and sad at the ending.  I really wanted a better ending.  Better yet, I wanted a better ending for Jackson and Evie.  I really want them to make it.

Overall, this is a good book.  Though this is a bit more of a mature YA due to some subject matter and events that happen.  Definitely recommend this book for a good read.

7 More Days Till It's The End Of The World: A Guest Post from Ash Krafton

I get apocalypse anxiety.
Seriously.
When the whole Mayan calender threat first hit the news, I hyperventilated. OMG. We'reallgonnadie.
My husband just rolled his eyes. He's used to my vapors.
I'd long ago forbade him to watch any disaster shows or movies. Anything with killer tsunamis or nuclear fall out or apocolypto-anything. Off limits. We are a disaster-free zone in this house, dammit.
I did sit through that movie about the caldera below Yellowstone National Park. It's just a matter of time. I know it. So keep your tales of boiling geysers and killer bears to yourselves, because the true danger is that big-ass supervolcano getting ready to erupt. I bet those damn Mayans have it hard-wired to go off in two weeks.
Deep breath...
Of course, I take comfort in the words of my guru, prophet of the stars Neil DeGrasse Tyson, who recently Tweeted:
Neil deGrasse Tyson‏@neiltyson
Y'all should know by now that if the World were going to end for any cosmic reason, I'd tell you how and I'd tell you when.
I trust this guy. But still. Just in case the reason for our impending demise isn't a cosmic event, I've decided to go out, go with a bang...or at least a BLAST!

8 More Days Till It's The End Of The World: A Guest Post From Elizabeth Marx

THE END OF THE WORLD???

I am Philabe, the Keeper of the Book of Ascent, from the House of Sweepers and Keepers. I am a vampire, but was born a human. I became a monk when I was ten and four at the dawn of Christianity. When I was a middle-aged man, I was a devoted priest in a monastery where we created illuminated manuscripts, until an arch vampire came looking for secret information hidden in our scrolls. When we monks refused to give this creature of the night what he came for, my brothers were taken one by one. Each night those of us left thought we had secured our lodgings from him, but their screams would rattle the monastery walls as he took their blood. I was the last among them. He was not merciful enough to kill me, but instead he made me his immortal servant. It was many lifetimes before I was able to escape him, but I became the most learned among the House of Keepers and I have often been called upon in the darkest hours of human and vampire existence to explain the workings of the world.

December 21, 2012 is the start of the winter solstice and this is Yule, a time of higher consciousness. It is also the day the Mayan calendar says that the word ends. But a closer examination of the source materials reveals that the true meaning of the prophecy is that “The world will not end. It will be transformed.” The only other unusual event that day is that the sun will be aligned with the center of the Milky Way for the first time in nearly 26,000 years. The Mayans never intended the calendar to end in 2012, but that instead, another cycle begins afterward. Modern Mayan’s say there is no such concept as an apocalypse in their culture.
The ancient Mayan’s were clever, they discovered that vampires existed and at first they viewed us as Gods and they gave ritual sacrifices of their own people to keep my kind from their villages. The Mayanʻs made sacrifices believing that the only way for the sun to rise and for us to stay to the night was for them to forfeit someone to the gods. But more and more of the ‘gods’ came, and once the Mayan’s determined our true natures and our unquenchable desire for blood, they started hunting and sacrificing my vampire brethren. Many of the vampires scattered to the winds, but these rituals had become so popular among the Mayan people that they had to sacrifice humans in our stead. The vampire slayers known as inquisitors and monks, tried to stop the ritual bloodletting of humans but the Mayan’s would repent for a bit, but always searched further and further afield for our kind and the entertainment they craved, for a vampire can withstand torture for much longer than a human. Finally, one among our Clans of Cain, a very powerful vampire, tired of the Mayan’s pursuit of him, and he set the nosferatu upon the Mayan’s. A great plague spread among their people and finally destroyed their entire civilization.

9 More Days Till It's The End Of The World: A Waiting on Wednesday (HOPEFULLY) Etiquette & Espionage by Gail Carriger

Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.
This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Description:

It's one thing to learn to curtsy properly. It's quite another to learn to curtsy and throw a knife at the same time. Welcome to finishing school.

Fourteen-year-old Sophronia is the bane of her mother's existence. Sophronia is more interested in dismantling clocks and climbing trees than proper etiquette at tea--and god forbid anyone see her atrocious curtsy. Mrs. Temminnick is desperate for her daughter to become a proper lady. She enrolls Sophronia in Mademoiselle Geraldine's Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality.

But little do Sophronia or her mother know that this is a school where ingenious young girls learn to finish, all right--but it's a different kind of finishing. Mademoiselle Geraldine's certainly trains young ladies in the finer arts of dance, dress, and etiquette, but also in the other kinds of finishing: the fine arts of death, diversion, deceit, espionage, and the modern weaponries. Sophronia and her friends are going to have a rousing first year at school.

Coming out on February 5, 2013

Why?
  1. What a unique name for the lead character.  I will admit, that is really what caught my attention.  Thankfully, this isn't another Bella, Stephanie, Lena, Sarah, Savannah, or any of the other common names used in a lot of books.
  2. This school sounds like an amazing place.  Learn etiquette and how to become an assassin.  Really?!?!  Yes, please!
  3. I like how the cover is sparse, but pretty self explanatory.  You don't know if the girl is posing for a picture or prepping for your murder.

So what are you waiting for?

10 More Days Till It's The End Of The World: A Review From Kim

Description:

Though the Serbian pack has been brought to heel thanks to the downfall of their Alpha, the war is far from over.
Desdemona, a witch of unfathomable power, has escaped the wolves’ wrath, but she will not go quietly into the night. She takes refuge in a place where even the smallest sliver of light does not dare to enter. Though she had to flee, she has not given up on the treasure she wishes to acquire. Her depravity knows no bounds; she's even willing to search for the one who can assist her in opening a Veil that has not been opened in millennia – with good reason: the danger is incalculable.

Meanwhile, there are major changes rippling through the Romanian Grey wolves. Decebel has become Alpha to the Serbian pack in an effort to begin to unite the Canis lupis species. Their numbers are dwindling in the wake of the shortage of true mates and lack of offspring. The wolves are beginning to lose faith and darkness seems to be crashing in on them from all sides. But the winds of change are blowing, changes that will alter the future of not only the Canis lupis, but of another ancient race as well.
Amidst all of this, Sally is continuing to come to terms with her relationship with the playful, charming, flirty, unbelievably handsome bartender – who happens to be a member of the Romanian pack.
If all that weren’t enough, the Fates have decided to pay a little visit to Jen. It’s time to collect. She cheated the Fates of a life, her life. Now they want what they are due. The problem? It’s more than Jen is willing to pay.
Yes, the war is indeed far from over. Bargains will be struck, declarations will be made, sacrifices will be given, love will be tested, and trust will be questioned as evil makes its stand against them all.

My Review:

Beyond the Veil by Quinn Loftis
Rating: 5 out of 5

This is the fifth book in the Grey Wolf Series, and it continues the tale of Jen, Jacque, and Sally.  There are a lot of twists and turns in this book as the witch Desdamona continues her quest to kill all of the Canis Lupis.  Each couple in this book must endure challenges beyond their comprehension.  You will definitely be on the edge of your seat as you read this one.
Jacque and Fane are still the lovesick puppies.  They are quiet and reserved about their relationship.  We don’t get a lot of information on how their relationship in this book.  They just continue on like they have in the last two books.

Jen and Decebel are on fire as always.  They really steal the show in this book.  Jen is full of her outlandish comments and actions.  She enrages Decebel at every turn.  The most touching part is when Jen must tell Decebel that she is pregnant and the Fates will kill their child as payment for Jen living.  This really shows the depth of their love and devotion for each other.  Jen opens up and lets out all of her fear.  It is a rare moment to see the loving and caring person that Jen can be.

Sally and Costin are just beginning their romance.  At the end of the last book we saw a glimpse of their attraction.  Here we see their bond grow stronger.  Sally is shy and timid but does not turn away from her mate even when she is scared.  There story is not as in depth as the other two.  I feel that Sally gets the short end of the straw because her romance is cut short due to the impending war with Desdamona.

The Great Luna makes an appearance in this book and shakes things up for her Canis Lupis.  She also does everything in her power to help the supernaturals to defeat Desdamona.  Unfortunately, the witch is prepared this time and our favorite pack members are put through the worst trial.
This is an awesome book to continue the series.  I can’t wait to read the next one to see what happens to our wolves, healers, and Fae.  There is a lot going on in this one so make sure to take your time reading it.

12 More Days Till It's The End Of The World: Meet Author, Ada Adams

She is the author of ReVamped and ReAwakened.

Meet Ada Adams:

“Many people sing in the shower. I write scenes in my head and act them out.”

At the age of five, Ada read her first chapter book—Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren. Ever since that moment, she developed an intense passion for stories and characters found within the pages of literature.
In her career as an actress and a writer, Ada currently spends most of her days immersed in imaginary worlds. Much like the characters she enjoys playing and writing about, Ada is a martial artist with a Black Belt in Shotokan Karate. She is also a big proponent of lifelong learning, and has attained a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology (it aids in creating characters with unique quirks!) as well as a Master’s of Science in Education.
Ada strives to bring a fresh voice and perspective to fiction. She has been writing creatively for many years, and is an editor of a global fashion/literary magazine called VEUX. ReVamped is her debut novel.
She lives in Toronto, Canada, and enjoys adventurous nature hikes with her adorable puppies Cara and Oreo.
