The Mage in Black by Jaye Wells

Description:

Sabina Kane doesn't have the best track record when it comes to family. After all, her own grandmother, the leader of the vampire race, just tried to kill her. When she arrives in New York to meet the mage side of her family, the reunion takes the fun out of dysfunctional.

On top of that, the Hekate Council wants to use her as a pawn in the brewing war against the vampires. Her mission will take her into the bowels of New York's Black Light district, entangles her in mage politics, and challenges her beliefs about the race she was raised to distrust. And Sabina thought vampires were bloodthirsty.

Review:
The Mage in Black by Jaye Wells
5 out of 5

This fast pace book picks right back up where the 1st one left off.  Literally, they are in the car on the way to New York…

Sabina:  May I just vent just an itty-bitty bit?  Can I just say that Sabina is the BIGGEST idiot in the whole wide world!  WTH!  Slade is ok, but why waste your time when you have a yummy Adam Lazarus there willing to break all the rules for YOU?  Ugh!  And she sure as hell should feel guilty!  Uber guilty.

Anyways, besides that, I do like Sabina.  She is a strong character that has been wounded and betrayed multiple times. And as such she is slow to trust.  This whole book is about Sabina getting to know herself, learning about her other side of her family and discovering what really matters in life.

I love how Maisey is the polar opposite twin.  But she was reminded me slightly of Vinka… Sweet, gentle and a bit too Naïve.  I thought it was interesting on how different she was to Sabina.  It did give an interesting idea/twist to the “Nature vs. Nurture” debate.

Rhea is a really cool older mage. She is strong willed, has a wicked sense of humor, and at times was a real bitch… Definitely loved her.  Laughed so hard when she asked Giguhl why his penis was forked… It was too much!

Giguhl and Volva (not to be confused with vulva!) were some of the funniest (and horniest) characters What a perfect couple to energize the book with a lot of laughter.

So much happened in this book.  You meet werewolves, vampires, and mages.  You read about Demon Fight Club and learn more about the prophecy about Sabina.  Plus, you have to keep guessing on who is trying to kill Sabina.  I mean, really, how many people could really want her dead?  :P

Overall, this is a great book.  Absolutely loved it and I’m looking forward to reading the next book.

Happy Reading!

Descent of Blood by Elizabeth Marx

Description:

When times are darkest, some vampires desire more than blood …
England, 1465. Mortal men clash in the War of the Roses for the English crown, while vampire warriors’ move undetected among their ranks, savoring the flow of blood that battlefields provide.

Vampire prince, Severian Pearce, fears the revelation of the immortal clans to humankind should King Henry fall from power. While in pursuit of Henry’s enemies, Severian comes to the aid of Meridian Neville, a human woman he craves—and not for the scent of her blood … Meridian is torn between honoring her father’s dying wish and her unexplainable yearning for Lord Severian. But as Severian and Meridian work together to protect a relic hunted by mortals and immortals alike, the red veil descends over them. This all-consuming attraction can drive immortals to the brink of madness. Will the existence of this powerful bond between a human and a vampire be enough to unite the immortal clans or is the red veil a scourge set on destroying any chance they might have of happiness?

When all hope is lost, one vampire will fight unto death for his forbidden love.

My Review:
Holy Sweet Mother of the Great Cow Daisy…. This book was great!  It had romance, it had intrigue, it had a mystical mystery about the red veil and Cain, it had adventure, and a bit of murder.  Add in the old English, and the War of the Roses in the background, and you have the makings of an amazing book!

Meridian is one of those strong, innocent, and absolutely amazing women that you hope that you would be like in those situations that she finds herself in. I liked her first thing after she was handling the crossbow that was pointed at Serverain.  Nothing like a strong willed woman who is willing to defend herself.

Serverian is that sexy knight in shining armour that would strip you naked, have his way with you and then marry you… In that order :P.  And then he would protect you and your honor by killing, maiming, and many other manly things that would just make you want to keep him around… Yep, definitely loved him as a character.

Arrian… I don’t know what to say about him, but he is definitely something else.  As a forerunner to the story, he already knows the secret of the red veil.

Philabe was a great minor character who seems to be everywhere, even when he wasn’t.  Think of this book as kind of like his diary of the events.  I kind of like that.

I do love the type of vampires that were in this book.  There were enough to where I kind of lost track. But learning who was what, and what skills the vampires have was pretty cool.

I will admit that there was some slow going at the beginning of the book.  It took me getting through to the 2nd chapter before I was learned that I loved this book.

The only thing I had a hard time with that disappointed me in this book was what I call the Twilight Cliché.  I knew as soon as they got together what was going to happen.  But since that was the only disappointment I had, I think we are ahead of the game.

Overall, this is a great book!  Highly recommend and I am looking forward to the next book.

Blood on Silk by Marie Treanor

Description:

While in Romania researching historical superstitions, Scottish academic Elizabeth Silk comes upon the folk tale of Saloman, a seductive prince staked centuries ago, legend's most powerful vampire. Now, in the ruins of a castle crypt, Elizabeth discovers supernatural legends that have come alive. Her blood has awakened him. Her innocence has aroused him. But Elizabeth unleashes more than Saloman's hunger, and it's going to unite them in ways neither could have imagined.

My Review:
Yummy!  That is what this delicious, sexy, confection of a book is.  The fact that the only reason I had to put the book down was because I had to work at both jobs (blah) and sleep (yea! And blah at the same time) should tell you how absolutely AMAZING this book is.

Elizabeth is an amazing and relatable character.  Some of us have always seemed to be so lacking in some area that we desire to be more but we don’t know what to do.  Elizabeth is that way.  I think also how she is skeptic about the whole vampire thing is relatable.  I mean, I know a lot of us say that we believe, but if we actually met a vampire, would we even believe it?  Probably not.

I also love how Elizabeth is actually slightly supernatural because of her ancestor’s vampire killing deeds.  Now, half is believable, with her training to fight, but the fact that she kept it together while she actually battled was a bit farfetched, but I loved how she did learn quickly to use her latent talents.

Saloman is a delicious vampire, and honestly, I wouldn’t mind a little world domination with him.  He is centuries old, wise, but lonely.  I think that was the worst part of being contained in the crypt for him:  The loneliness.  I think after those 300 years, he might be willing to consider giving up the idea of world domination for Elizabeth.  Though I don’t know if he realizes it.

I love how Ms. Treanor takes history and gives it a new twist, mixing it with yummy vampires, strong vampire hunters, magic, and other supernatural creatures.  I can’t help but love it all!

I think my favorite part of the whole book, though, was how Ms. Treanor gives a new version of vampires.  Salomon is an Ancient, which is a race of vampires that were the forerunner to the modern vampire.  They are so similar, but so different at the same time.  Plus, you add the added power to be received for each vampire killed, which makes the hunters or vampires stronger. What a great way to set up a whole new vampire myth.

Overall, a great book!  I’m so looking forward to finishing this series, and reading more by Ms. Treanor.  Highly Recommended!

Secret of the Wolf by Cynthia Garner

Description:

Once a generation, the rift between the paranormal world and the human world opens, allowing supernatural entities to cross. Vampire, demon, or shapeshifter, they can save the world-or send it spiraling into chaos.

As a werewolf liaison to the Council of Preternaturals, Tori Joseph is used to straddling the world between humans and immortals. She plays by the rules and always delivers justice, no matter the cost. But after a string of increasingly brutal attacks results in humans turning into werewolves, Tori doesn't reveal her horrifying suspicion: Someone very close to her might be responsible.

Investigating the paranormal violence, no-nonsense detective Dante MacMillan believes Tori is hiding something. His search for the truth draws him into greater danger as he gets closer to the dark realm of the immortals-and to the sexy werewolf who stirs his primal lust. Now with evil closing in around them, Dante must convince Tori to trust him . . . before her deadly secret destroys them both.

My Review:

I was super excited about this book, which is the 2nd installment of the Warriors of the Rift series.  I loved the first one, and I knew that I would be waiting impatiently for the newest one to come out.
I think that Victoria (Tori) is an amazing woman, as she is has a lot of characteristics that we can understand.  She is strong, smart, and has survived more in her hundred plus years on earth than most humans in 80 or 90 years.   I also think that her loneliness is something that we can all relate to.
I think the one thing that I do have a problem with Tori about is her problem with her brother and her cousin.  She is way too hopeful about their redemption/second chance at life on earth.  Almost to the point of turning a blind eye to the problems they are causing.  But a lot of us are like that when it comes to family.
Dante was a great character!  I mean, he was in the first novel, and was kind of a cool guy then, but now, he is just absolutely lovable.  He has his issues, just like everyone, and you can’t help but want to help him out with them and then take him home and feed him pie.
I did enjoy how Nix & Tobias made several appearances in this novel, but it wasn’t so reliant on the previous book.  Honestly, this book could be a standalone book.
There were only two issues I had with this book.
·        I found the book was a bit monotonous, especially when the characters were going into technical aspects of machinery… including the rift device.  Not a big fan of that kind of thing.
·        I didn’t like that Natchook had other names, and that I didn’t realize who he was until after the fact.  It is hard to keep things straight when you are trying to figure out if the character you are reading about is a good guy or a bad guy just because of which name he is using!
Overall, this was a good book, with a lot of romance, action and intrigue.  I recommend this book for your enjoyment!

My Review:

I LOVED this book.  Let me tell you how much I loved this book.  I loved this book like I love cheesecake, chocolate, and my books all rolled into one.  Yep, that means I love it a lot!

So let’s just jump right in on why I love this book.

Abby:

·        Now, lethe-drugged Abby is not as cool, fun or inspiring, but then, I guess, she isn’t supposed to be.  I mean, if she was cooler, funner (I know this isn’t a word, but work with me), or more inspiring, we might all want to take a swig of the lethe water!  Thankfully, we only have to deal with lethe-drugged Abby for a couple of chapters.  Then our favorite touchstone dreamer comes back!
·        I love how she comes back with a bang, so to speak.  After having the lethe water “spell” broken, she kind of comes back Captain Jack Harkness style… only with the help of a Unicorn and some Fae.
·        I do have a problem with why she can’t decide between Talivar and Brystion.  I mean, I know they are both wonderful guys, I think they’re great, but I just want her to pick one for the love of Pete!  Personally, I’m Team Brystion, so that is who I’m hoping she is going to pick!

Brystion:

·        If you haven’t figured it out, I think he is amazing.  He is a complex and compelling character that you want to want you.  No matter whether he is Mortal or Incubus, he is an amazing character.
·        His sacrifice, his love for Abby, his hope to have a dreaming heart, etc, just makes him all the more appealing.
·        Plus, I think he is sexy, even horns, silver tattoos and a demon side.

Other characters:

·        I love finding out that the Queen of Fairy is a giant conniving bitch with a plan… Yep, nice twist to add to the insane Queen!
·        Talvar is a cool character, but he is kind of the sad character that you feel you must love because he has had no love at all.  I think it is wonderful how much he cares for Abby, and how he is willing to sacrifice so much for her, but I somehow wish he would find someone else that would love him as much who wasn’t Abby.
·        Phineas is a great, great, great character.  He brings so much laughter to my day as my favorite drunken, late night gaming, horny, underwear-loving, ass-biting unicorn!  Plus, how he loves and care for Abby makes his character that much more loveable!

Now, my biggest question is:  WHO IS THE DADDY?  I mean, I know who I prefer to be the daddy, but I’m dying here!  I am hoping a short story or another book will play with this idea and give me some more happiness!  Because, damn it, I want to know!!!!!!

Overall, this is a great book that will keep you on the edge of your seat.  Highly recommend, and I’m hoping for another round in this series!

Expiez: Redeem Your Blood Lust by C.D. Hussey

Description:
After spending a year in jail for his involvement in the murder of Melissa Schwartz, Darus is determined to change his life. But that's all easier said than done. It isn't until Clare Brown, the sister of a woman who hates him more than Satan, shows up unexpectedly in New Orleans that he finds the motivation to truly change.

If only the path to her wasn't lined with land mines...

Hmmm, I love these books!  And this one just keeps cementing me in to loving this series!  I loved this book for a number of reasons.

Darus, previous villain in book 1, is now a good guy.  Or rather, he is trying to be a good guy.  He is a surprisingly likeable character, even when he is being a dick.  I enjoyed seeing his conflict, his desire, and how he is trying to change to be a better person.  It makes him that much more realistic and relatable as a character.

Clare is both a likeable and unbelievable character. I hate that she was in an abusive relationship, but she seemed to “resolve” it all way too quickly.  Plus, she still has a decent sense of self-worth/self-esteem, for a woman who has experienced abuse for an extended period of time, which also makes her a bit unrealistic.  But on a whole, she was a good character that was just trying to find herself in the midst of everyone else trying to tell her.

In the last book and in this one, I do not like Julie too much.  She has been difficult to like, honestly, what with her issues of holding grudges, being jealous, and some of her anger towards those she has already written off. Honestly, she is acting like a teenager, which is ridiculous.  It doesn’t make her an appealing character, and you want her to get some sense knocked into her.

Wow!  There were some really hot moments in this book.  And by hot, I mean, “Girl, turn on the fans, get some ice and wear something cool, because there is a heat wave coming!” hot… Yep, definitely hot J

On a final note, I think this book was the perfect way to wrap up the Lohr story line.  Actually, it was wrapped up so perfectly, it was like it was pretty package with a cute little bow.

Overall, I think this book was really good, and I’m looking forward to reading more by Ms. Hussey.  Highly Recommend.

Audio Book: Red-headed Stepchild by Jaye Wells

Description:

In a world where being of mixed-blood is a major liability, Sabina Kane has the only profession fit for an outcast: assassin. But, her latest mission threatens the fragile peace between the vampire and mage races and Sabina must scramble to figure out which side she's on. She's never brought her work home with her---until now.

This time, it's personal.

My Review:

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What a great audio book!  I mean, it was just a great book period, but I think getting to hear it as an audio book was great (it at least gave me an idea on how to pronounce some of the names!).

Sabine is such a badass character!  And I loved it.  As an assassin, she is the best of the best.  But as a ½ vampire and ½ mage, she is still trying to figure out who she is and even struggles to accept herself.  I think that once she figures out how important she is, she will be more powerful than even she realizes.

Giguhl, aka Mr. Giggles, (and yes, I had to look up the spelling for this name… How in the heck did you think I figured it out?) is the best demon EVER!  I think he was a very funny character who just brought an interesting twist to everything going on.  I know after he shifted into a cat, I was rolling on the floor with laughter.  I know I have personally said “I will not kill to the demon cat” several times about my own evil minions. So I can definitely sympathize with Sabina.  And can I just say that I almost cried when he went back to Hell… I just wanted him to stick around forever!

Adam Lazarus, the mysterious mage and Mr. Sexy incarnate was my favorite character.  I wish that Sabina had just vamp speeded him to the nearest bed and had her way with him!  But on a completely non-sexual level, I think he holds a lot of secrets, some of which might lead to a turning point for Sabina.  Definitely think some of the secrets include her in the prophecies.

I think my favorite character of all was Vinca.  She was the peppy hippie cheerleader with an occasional slutty side that would come shining through.  She was so nice, and she always wanted to be helpful no matter what, but she was way too perky for Sabina.  I hated to see her go, and I wish that something had happened to change it.

This book is full of twist that you may not (or you might be smarter than me and see them coming) see coming at you.  I thought they were great, and kept the story moving along well.

I LOVED Ms. Well’s idea to make something as simple as hair color be the mark of a vampire.  Very original in my opinion.  On top of that, I think her version of the vampire/mage/fae/demon myth was definitely different and unique.

In regards to me reading it in audio book format, I think that having a magical being chart/glossary would be helpful for all of you visual learners.  Plus, this glossary really needs to have a chart on councils, and primary locations for these beings.  Just for reference points, you know.

Overall, I think this was a great book, and I am looking forward to reading the other books in this series.

Happy Reading!

A reckoning is coming…and not everyone will survive.

My Review:

There are books that you wait all year for, because you know they are going to be amazing!  Let me tell you, this was definitely one of those books, and it was even better than my expectations.

I like how this book starts exactly where Book 1 left off.  Best yet is how it is a smooth transition.  You could almost believe you are reading a new book.

Boy, did this book make me hate the Clann right from the start.  The pompous, arrogant, bigoted group needs a wakeup call (and after the end of book 2, I’m sure one is coming!).  All I keep thinking is what horrible people, especially after the torture they put Savannah and Nanna through.  Really pissed me off.  Can’t wait to see what Book 3 will do to them J.

It broke my heart for Savannah how she lost Nanna, her mom, her boyfriend, and then her dad got mixed in more.  So much heartache  in so short a time.  But I like how we get to know Savannah’s father, Michael, more.

I LOVE the use of Celtic myth with the Keepers.  I think that Ron is a great intro to the Keepers.  I’m definitely feeling that the Keepers are going to be playing a bigger role in the next book, which makes me happy.

It is interesting how Gowin, Savannah’s dad’s sire, comes into the book.  He is an interesting character to get to know, and how he changes the story is very interesting.  I also think it was helpful how Gowin explained how a traditional vamp changes compared to Savannah’s changes.  The vast differences and similarities were very good to know.

The last couple of chapters of the book are both encouraging and sad.  The changes that happen, the choices that are made, and the actions taken are some of the hardest these characters have to make. It is amazing how just a few pages, a few decisions, and the whole world changes.   It also helps that in the last couple of chapters, and even the last couple of pages, the villain is revealed.  I DID NOT SEE THAT ONE COMING!!!!!  OMGoodness!  That was just an amazing twist, and all I can say is WOW!  Also the villain’s actions pretty much help set up total chaos for the next book J.

Overall, this is a great book, and I’m dying for the next book!  Highly Recommend!

The Lady is a Vamp by Lynsay Sands

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Description:

One late night leads to...

Kidnapped When Jeanne Louise Argeneau left work, she never thought she'd end up tied down by a good-looking mortal. More attracted than annoyed, she quickly realizes there is more to her abductor than meets the eye.

One desperate act leads to...

But with the immortal world's answer to law enforcement hunting them, their time together is running out...and Paul and Jeanne Louise will need to risk everything to spend an eternity together.

My Review:

Finally, Jeanne Louise gets her life mate!  After getting to know her little by little through her brothers and cousins, her dad & stepmom, it was about time that we got to read her story, and what a great story it was.

I had thought from the other books that Jeanne Louise was a quiet and sad character, but in reality she is a fun, geeky, and strong woman.  She knows what she wants, and when she figures it out, she will do everything in her power to make it happen.

I liked our introduction to Paul Jones.  He is such a great guy.  He desperately wants to save his daughter, but he can’t help but be attracted to Jeanne Louise.  Stuck between being selfish and being selfless in regards to Livy and Jeanne Louise, you want everything to work out.

I love how most of the family gets involved in this book.  And I LOVE how Margaurite was still involved with Jeanne Louise and Paul’s life mate set up.  Makes me smile about her match making!

Bricker is involved in this book more towards the end, but I do like him a lot.  I think he is a great character, and I hope one of the next book will be about him.  I can only imagine the finny things that could occur for him and his life mate.

Overall, this is a good book. I recommend reading the other books in the series before reading this one, but I do recommend it.

Dracula's Secret by Linda Mercury

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Description:

In a world where humans and paranormal creatures share an uneasy coexistence, Valerie Tate has a secret. Not only is she one of the last surviving vampires, she is also the Dracula of legend, having lived her life in disguise and eventually reverting to her natural, female form after going into exile during World War II.

On the eve of a historic paranormal summit in Portland, Valerie has come to the city with one sole goal: to kill her brother, vampire Radu Tepes. Radu is about to announce his candidacy for the office of President, but he has secret, sinister motives for his desire to become the first vampire president of the United States.

At the same time former Army chaplain Lance Soliel has opened the doors of his struggling homeless shelter to both humans and paranormals, a controversial move that attracts the scrutiny of the media and the ire of Radu. Targeted for death, Lance is rescued by Valerie. Despite their smoldering attraction Valerie does not want to be distracted from her goal, but when she realizes Lance can lead her to Radu she becomes his bodyguard. But not all is as it seems, for Lance is no ordinary human. He is actually a Fallen Angel with paranormal abilities of his own, abilities that he will have to rediscover in time to save both his life and Valerie's.

My Review:

So when I read the synopsis of this book, I was like, “this sounds cool”.  I mean, it is an interesting premise:  Dracula actually being a woman in drag.  Who wouldn’t think that this would be an interesting twist on the Dracula/vampire myth?  And it was to a point.
Primarily, I found this to be a story of redemption and how opposites attract (though, they weren’t too much in the form of opposites).  Bot Valerie (aka Vlad) and Lance were seeking redemption and freedom from their pasts.  Both were believable characters, and I liked the fact that you wanted to cheer both on as they reached (sometimes in a pointless way) to succeed in redeeming themselves.
I enjoyed the flashbacks for both characters (going all the way back to Vlad/Valerie’s young adult days).  I really enjoyed Valerie’s flashbacks, as you got to understand how she became the woman she was in modern times compared to the man she was in her past.  It was also nice to see a different twist on history, like WWII, and such.
The only thing was that I had a few problems with the book.
1.   The flipping of the character POVs.  Sometimes it took a few pages in a chapter to figure out what POV you were reading.  Maybe if they had been labeled, it would have made it easier?
2.   Glossary.  I wish there had been one, as it would have made it easier to keep track of all the supernaturals that were introduced to in the book.  Some were described differently than I would have expected, so it would have been nice to have a reference point.
3.   Biggest issue:  How did NO ONE NOT know that Dracula was really a woman?  I mean, boobs plus a lack of a penis = woman, right?  Then again, there were a few mentions of Dracula and having sex with his wife…. Maybe a strap-on?  IDK… Does make you wonder.
Overall, it was an okay read.  Not too bad, though it can get a bit dark, so I can recommend it for a beach day read.

Happy Reading!

Eveillez: Deny Your Blood Lust by C.D. Hussey

Driven to save herself while saving him, she makes it her mission to help him.

But even Angel's talents might not be enough to overcome his demons.

My Review:

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Welcome to the darkest book of the Human Vampire series.  Now, this is not to say that it is a bad book, but it is definitely it is not a book to read if you are currently in a depression, because it will definitely keep your energy there if you aren’t careful.

This book starts just days after the end of De Sang.  Detective Kevin McCoy is a man who is always exhausted, living on caffeine like it was a blood transfusion, and still he is barely making it through the day.  I loved his point of view as an outsider being brought in.  Granted we did see that with Julia in La Luxure, but this was different.  Julia was drawn to it as a donor and because of Armand.  Kevin is drawn to it (albeit, unknowingly) because he is actually a Human Vampire in need of blood.  The view of an outsider who is repelled by the idea of blood fetishes and drinking of blood will definitely give you a broader view of the culture.

I loved how we got to know Angel better.  She was always a mystery in the previous two books.  You wondered about the woman who was described so beautifully.  She is a woman with a dark past that has learned to move forward, but current guilt caused by recent events are taking a toll on her.  She is having a hard time collecting Prana and her Donors are not enough anymore.

Both main characters are dealing with stress, changes, and circumstances beyond their control.  You can’t help but wonder if they are going to make it a time or two.

I love how we get to see another side to Julia and Armand.  I mean, their story ended on such a happy note, and you can’t help but hope they get a “happily-ever-after”, but this is real life, and no one gets that.  There are trials, secrets, and sins that must be faced.  I loved how Ms. Hussey faced reality, and didn’t make their life perfect.

Even though this was a darker book than the previous one in this series, no one actually died in it.  I know, I’m weird, I noticed that no one actually died (yes, they found a dead body, but that doesn’t count!).

Overall, I recommend this book.

Does This Unlace by C. D. Hussey

Description:

Does This Unlace? is a short, erotic story-more like a bonus scene-featuring the characters from La Luxure. A quick, dirty, free read...

It's Valentine's Day in New Orleans and the celebration is going strong at La Luxure, an underground blood-bar for Human Vampires. Julia has picked out a sexy new dress to tempt Armand. Will they make it upstairs?

My Review:

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

In this little short novel by Ms. Hussey, we get to see Julia and Armand’s Valentine’s Day.  And let me tell you, it is HOT, HOT, HOT!

Really, I don’t know what else I can say about it.  Because it is that hot!  (And I’m glad I have read this story, because they do mention it in Eveillez: Deny Your Blood Lust, and it was nice to have a reference).  The only thing would be that it was too short :P.  Could have used a few more pages.

The only question I have is, will there be more short stories from the Human Vampire series?  I hope so, because I’m addicted and not ashamed to admit it!

I recommend this book, and HIGHLY recommend that you read the rest of the Human Vampire series by Ms. Hussey.
