Waiting on Wednesday: Antigoddess by Kendare Blake

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.
This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Description:
Old Gods never die…

Or so Athena thought. But then the feathers started sprouting beneath her skin, invading her lungs like a strange cancer, and Hermes showed up with a fever eating away his flesh. So much for living a quiet eternity in perpetual health.

Desperately seeking the cause of their slow, miserable deaths, Athena and Hermes travel the world, gathering allies and discovering enemies both new and old. Their search leads them to Cassandra—an ordinary girl who was once an extraordinary prophetess, protected and loved by a god.

These days, Cassandra doesn’t involve herself in the business of gods—in fact, she doesn’t even know they exist. But she could be the key in a war that is only just beginning.

Because Hera, the queen of the gods, has aligned herself with other of the ancient Olympians, who are killing off rivals in an attempt to prolong their own lives. But these anti-gods have become corrupted in their desperation to survive, horrific caricatures of their former glory. Athena will need every advantage she can get, because immortals don’t just flicker out.

Every one of them dies in their own way. Some choke on feathers. Others become monsters. All of them rage against their last breath.

The Goddess War is about to begin.

Coming out on September 10, 2013

Why?
  1. I love Greek mythology, and Athena was always one of my favorite goddesses.
  2. The story sounds so interesting.  I must admit, it sounds like nothing else that I have read recently… Which makes it all the more appealing.
  3. I like how it sounds like it uses a lot of Greek mythology, which includes important characters from some major stories.
  4. The cover looks so different.  At first, when I saw the cover, I thought it was going to be another angel book.  But it isn’t.  I love that about it.

So what are you waiting for?

Bewitching Book Tour: Love Is Darkness by Caroline Hanson

Description:

Valerie Dearborn wants a cotton candy life, but it’s more like a puffer fish: pointy, unusual, and—if not prepared exactly right—deadly.

In London for graduate school, Val knows she's finally free. Her father and ex-almost-boyfriend are back in California and she's out of the Vampire hunting biz for good. Or is she?

She draws the attention of Lucas, a 1600 year old Vampire, and King to his kind. He’s also wicked hot. As golden as Lucifer, and just as tempting, he makes Valerie an offer she can't refuse— help him find out if the Others (Empaths, Fey and Werewolves) still exist or he'll stop protecting those she loves.

Lucas tells her that Empaths were a Vampire’s biggest weakness before going extinct hundreds of years ago. While the Fey or a Werewolf might kill a Vampire, an Empath could enslave them, seducing or harming with emotions at will. The one detail he leaves out? Valerie is an Empath.

And after 1600 years of an emotionless existence, Lucas wants Valerie like a recovering alcoholic wants a wine cooler.

Can she keep those she loves alive, stop Lucas from munching on her, survive a fanged revolution and still find a way to have that boring, normal life she’s always wanted? Probably not, but boy is she gonna try!

This is a full length novel and contains adult content.

Excerpt:

Decision made, Lucas grabbed Roberto, biting into his neck before Roberto could defend himself. Blood coursed into him with a hot rush. The taste was bitter because it came from another vampire, but underneath that was a faint sweetness and spice that infected him.
Just a taste and then I’ll stop.
He knew that for a lie. He’d stop only when the blood finished riding him.
Lucas drank furiously, like he’d just emerged from the desert, some unknown amount of time passing before he became aware of himself and his surroundings. Gathering himself, he forced himself to slow his drinking, feeling a physical pain as he released fangs from flesh.
He threw Roberto from him and Roberto scrambled away, his hand at his neck, holding the torn flesh together.
Lucas paced away from Roberto, hand over his mouth. What am I doing? His hand was frozen, blood coating his lips and now his fingers. He wanted to lick his lips, suck his fingers clean, go back to Roberto and find more. What a mistake.
His hand trembled, in moments he'd be overwhelmed.
His whole body pulsed in time to his heart, the blood snaking through him, leaving each nerve, blood vessel and cell altered and waiting for the magic to strike.
He was a rod in a lightning storm.
Was there even time to dispose of Roberto before he succumbed to the blood? He had to kill him, couldn't risk anyone finding out about the daughter.
The daughter.
Swiftly, he went back to Roberto, circling behind the crying man, hiding death for a few moments longer. With one solid blow his fist punched through Roberto’s back and into his chest, gripped the man’s heart in his hand and tugged it free, Roberto dissolving into ash.
Lucas felt caged, the need to move, run, cry, laugh and hurt all vying in him for control.
No.
He could control himself. After almost two thousand years he was his own master. He was the oldest and the strongest. Lucas was his own law.
His hands clenched.
Emotion touched him like a cattle prod and he fell to his knees, dead heart pounding in a staccato rhythm. His hand rose to his chest like he could catch the sharp pain knifing from his heart outwards.
Then it was gone. For just a second he thought that was it, that over the last four hundred years he’d become so deadened and powerful that the magic touched him, sputtered and died.
Then there was a pulse.
It’s not over.
A small kiss of sensation that was almost visible, like heat shimmering off asphalt, tickled down his spine.
This was a fatal mistake.
Emotion crashed over him. Feelings of joy filling him until he wanted to laugh like Roberto had, laugh like he was happy, carefree and mortal. But he couldn't remember how to laugh, a rough sound erupting from him instead.
The feeling changed, became a heavy pulse that left a deep throb in his sex. He was suddenly hard, full to bursting, aching painfully. Desire gripped him and he began to tremble in his need to—
No.
But the blood twisted through him, invaded every cell and molecule of his being, urging him onwards.
He'd forgotten this power. The tide of emotion that even a small amount of blood had upon him.
He'd known and forgotten.
Lucas remembered being a man, the pleasure taken and given. He could almost smell feminine heat around him, what it was like to feel a woman's thighs lock around his head in pleasure. The whimpering cries as he kissed her deeply. Once he'd become a vampire, sensations and feelings had become muted, but not now. Now he felt human again.
Desire became a fire within him, consumed him so that he was nothing but need. He fell to his knees, staring at his fisted hands. He swore, surprised to find his own hand gripping his cock. His hips rose jerkily, body demanding release even as his mind resisted.
And lost.
His whole body seized, feelings of pleasure twisting within him, the power rebounding. He shouldn't fight it, he knew that, but it went against his nature to give in, and so he tried to hold out against the blood's call.
His breath sawed out of him as he remembered the blood's rich sweetness. He squeezed himself reflexively, the memory of flavor flashing through his mind and then his body.
Like a landslide, the orgasm swept through him, his mental shields collapsing and he felt the heavy spasm of his cock as he came. He breathed heavily, unable to move as the aftershocks of pleasure gripped and released him.
An empath.
Stumbling to his feet, Lucas went to his rooms, discarding his clothes haphazardly on his way to the shower.
His mind raced and he remembered the world as it had been centuries ago. An uneasy balance of vampires, witches, werewolves, empaths and Fey. For centuries there had only been vampires, the Others gone. But an empath had escaped. Maybe the vampires were not as alone as he’d thought. Maybe the Others were scattered or hiding. What if they could come back? Restore a balance to the world and keep vampires under control. Could he find them? Did he want to?
The thought was… intriguing.
And then he remembered the dead empath had a daughter.
Interesting.

Review:

Love is Darkness by Caroline Hanson
3.5 out of 5

So, first, this book starts off with a prologue that is from 15 years ago… and then for the next 6 chapters, you get more of a prologue that spans 15 years up to the present day to set up the rest of the book.  It really isn’t until chapter 7 that you even get into the present day and the story actually picks up.  And of course it picks up because of sex… I know, punny and cliché, but it’s the truth.

Val is a character that is on an emotional roller coaster.  Fluxuating between hope, lust, anger, sadness, and a plethora of other emotions, it is sometimes hard to see what she is actually thinking or what she is hoping to accomplish.

Lucas is a deep well, and we have only begun to get a glimpse of who he is and what his goal actually is. I know he said he doesn’t have any “good” emotions, but I think that is a lie he tells both himself and others.  He still seems to have a lot of good emotions, and there is proof in everything he has done for Val.

Jack is an ass!  Ha ha, I made a funny!  Anyways, it is true.  He thinks he is doing things to protect Val, but in reality he is doing a lot of things to hurt her.  I am wondering what is going to happen between them, after what happened in the final chapter.

OMGoodness!  There are some definitely hot and steamy scenes in this book… Like Volcano hot & steamy.  And damn Val’s conflicted emotions as they prevented us from getting some Supernova hot & steamy scenes :P!

I think it is an interesting idea how the lost colony of Roanoke is involved.  This is one of the first mysteries of the New World, and it still boggles historians.  But the idea that the colonists might have been werewolves that were taken by the Fae is an interesting concept.  It is no weirder than any other theory on where the colonists went and what happened.

Be warned: The title says a lot.  This is a dark novel.  Between all the deaths, the dark/evil creatures & emotions you meet, and the fact that most events occur at night. So be prepared to feel a bit dreary.

Overall, this is a good book.  I definitely want to read the next couple of books, as I’m interested to see what actually might happen.

Bewitching Book Tour: Werewolves Be Damned by Stacey Kennedy

Werewolves Be Damned by
Stacey Kennedy

Description:
Nexi Jones—part witch, part guardian, and wannabe kick-ass warrior—can’t throw a punch or conjure the simplest magic. But that doesn’t stop her from hunting the werewolves who slaughtered her human family. She’ll have her revenge, but only if Kyden, the elite guardian, would get the hell out of her way.

Kyden can’t decide if Nexi wants to get herself killed or if she just has no clue what she’s doing. But her father made it clear: keep Nexi safe…or else. Of course, the more Nexi runs toward revenge, the more she needs Kyden’s aid, and as she grows into her power and confidence, so does his desire to protect her. The only problem? She’d rather he dropped dead.

But when a vampire paints a bull’s-eye on Nexi’s back, she’s hard-pressed to deny Kyden and the help he’s offering. Even if it means getting her revenge will be a little bit harder. At least it will still be as sweet.

Excerpt
I’ve found you, fur ball.

Nexi peered from behind the large oak tree and spotted the small log cabin nestled in the thick forest. The porch light cast a warm glow into the night. Fog settled over the lush grass, and the night was dark, eerie.

Stepping away from her hiding place behind the tree, she strode forward and gripped the dagger tightly in her hand. Keeping the silver blade pointed outward, she climbed the cabin’s porch steps, taking each one slowly to avoid detection.

Once she arrived at the front door, she wrapped her hand around the door handle. Rich hunger for revenge burned in her veins and made her intent on one thing: to slaughter the werewolf who escaped the night of her parents’ murder. Not caring what awaited her, she stormed inside, dagger pointed, ready to kill.

The simple cabin had two large brown couches near a wood-burning stove, a kitchenette behind the living room, and a quilt-covered bed resting in the back. And that was it; there were no other rooms to investigate. No secret hiding places she could see.

No damned werewolf.

She cursed, shut the front door behind her, then trotted down the steps to return to her hiding spot. On her way across the yard, she glanced at the space to the right of the tree, which looked much like a heat wave, indicating that the portal to the Otherworld remained.

In some places around the world—or the Earthworld, as supernaturals had called it—there were permanent portals to the supernatural realm. This portal had only appeared because Nexi had travelled to this cabin from the Otherworld. Once she passed through the portal again, the gateway would vanish.

Magic had its perks. Quick travel was one of them.

Nexi shook her head at how normal all this magical stuff seemed now. Just over a month ago she’d never believed in anything that went bump in the night. Now she knew all those things existed, and in fact, she was one of them.

To her horror, she had learned that her birth mother, Tillie, had been murdered by a power-hungry vampire, Lazarus.  All those years ago, her birth father, Drake, had protectively decided to block Nexi’s supernatural abilities. He had planned for her to live and die as a mortal. Now with her return to the Otherworld and the removal of the block on her true identity, there was no going back.

She was no longer plain, human, Nexi Jones.

She was Nexi Jones, part guardian, part witch.

Looking away from the portal and to her hiding spot until the werewolf returned, she hurried her steps. She wasn’t ready to return to the Otherworld yet. Not until she had the werewolf’s head as her wall ornament would she dare go home.

Just as she neared the tree, a woodsy scent that had nothing to do with the forest mixed with the citrusy aroma of aftershave. A blink of an eye later, the dagger she held was now at her throat, a hard body closed in on her back.

“You smelled lovely when you arrived.” The low voice by her ear held a faint English accent. “But I never imagined you’d be so pretty.”

The blade pressed into her skin, not drawing blood, but implying that if the werewolf chose, she’d be destined for the grave. “I’m…”

“Going to explain yourself.” He lowered the dagger, took hold of her arm, and jerked her forward.

In a few short strides, the werewolf tossed her through the threshold of the cabin, and slammed the door behind them. He sauntered to the couch, sat down, and regarded her. “Now then, darlin’.” His olive skin was stunningly flawless, and his chocolate-colored hair was spiked tall. “Why would a pretty lass like yourself plan to attack me?”

“Don’t move.” That charm wouldn’t fool her. “Stay right where you are.”

“My mouth is the only thing moving.” His slanted amber eyes raked over her. “Would you like me to stop talking?”

“No.” She hesitated then added, “Only your mouth can move. Nothing else. Tell me what you know.”
He gave her a long look. “I’d be glad to tell you anything you’d like, love.”

His kind face and soft voice wouldn’t trick her. He was a werewolf. She was certain, which was another oddity.

After the block on her supernatural abilities had been lifted, she could identify a supernatural creature as if knowing the difference between a brunette and a redhead. “Tell me why you killed my family.”

“That’s an interesting accusation.” He cocked his head, studying her with a frown. “But I think the more important question is who are you?”

She lifted her chin. “The lass who’s going to cut off your furry wolf balls.”

Succubus Blues by Richelle Mead

Description:

When it comes to jobs in hell, being a succubus seems pretty glamorous. A girl can be anything she wants, the wardrobe is killer, and mortal men will do anything just for a touch. Granted, they often pay with their souls, but why get technical?
But Seattle succubus Georgina Kincaid's life is far less exotic. At least there's her day job at a local bookstore--free books; all the white chocolate mochas she can drink; and easy access to bestselling, sexy writer, Seth Mortensen, aka He Whom She Would Give Anything to Touch but Can't.

But dreaming about Seth will have to wait. Something wicked is at work in Seattle's demon underground. And for once, all of her hot charms and drop-dead one-liners won't help because Georgina's about to discover there are some creatures out there that both heaven and hell want to deny.

Review:

Succubus Blues by Richelle Mead
2 out of 5

So, first off, I must say that I did not finish listening to this audio book.  I listened to over the half way mark, and stopped because the book wasn’t that interesting to me.  I mean, I didn’t even want to learn who was killing vampires/injuring supernaturals, or who was really stalking Georgina.  This book just wasn’t what I thought/hoped it would be.

So what did I discover through what I did listen to?

Georgina Kincaid is an unusual succubus.  She avoids nice guys, is a huge book lover, and in a lot of ways, she regrets giving up her mortal life for eternal youth and beauty.

Seth Mortenson is another such unusual character.  I’ve known a lot of introverts in my life, but I’ve never met one like him.  Personally, he reminds me of the few references of Georgina’s long dead husband from when she was a mortal.

I honestly didn’t have a good feeling about Roman.  He seemed too perfect, too exactly what Georgina needed… I don’t like that.  Anything that perfect has something wrong with them.

I will admit that I expected a bit more sexy times with a title having the word succubus in it.  That does not mean automatically that this was a bad book.  It just wasn’t what I was looking for.

I can’t recommend this book, but if you liked it, let me know why!

Review:

Pleasure Unbound by Larissa Ione
4 out of 5

So this is the first book that I have ever read/listened to by Ms. Iona, and let me tell you that I’m now hooked!  The whole thing was so delicious that if it wasn’t that I had to pay bills, I’d be buying more of this series!

So what did I like?

As an introduction, I must admit that it is very interesting. Getting to know the types of demons, what they can do, and such definitely added a whole new level to my paranormal appreciation.

I loved getting to know the characters.  Tayla and E are both really cool.  They are both wounded warriors, each in different ways.  And in many ways they need each other to not only heal each other’s wounds, but also to complete each other.

I liked the mystery of who was stealing organs from the demons, and the twist that I didn’t see coming.  Always nice to have a twist or two that you don’t see coming!

What I might have had a problem with?

I think that the beginning of the novel jumped in as if you already knew a lot of stuff (which I didn’t), and that was a bit confusing.  But, I pressed on and ended up loving this book.

I didn’t really like hearing the slayers’ POVs.  I know, you should know your enemy as much as your favorite characters, but I could really do without.

I had a hard time with how the audio book kept switching POV without so much as a hint until they said the name of who’s POV it is.  Unfortunately, this probably would have been better to actually read the book instead of listening to it as an audio book.

Overall?

This was a great book!  I loved almost every moment of it, and look forward to reading more of this series.  Highly recommend this book.

Happy Reading!

Waiting On Wednesday: Heaven and Hellsbane by Paige Cucaro

Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.
This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Description:

Emma Jane Hellsbane just unwittingly triggered a whole bunch of nephilim to come into their powers—and this new army has teamed up with Bariel, demon straight from Hell, who’s made it his mission to kill all the magisters on Earth. When they come after Eli, Emma and Officer Dan must work together to save him, but this makes Eli all the more tempted to Fall for Emma. And his fighting his feelings for her means Heaven has taken notice.

Now Emma isn’t just fighting off demons, rogue nephilim and Fallen angels, she’s defending her womanhood to the judgmental Seraphim angels, too, who want to separate Eli from Emma Jane. Can she protect Eli, Officer Dan, and find her rogue father? For Emma Jane, it’s all in a day’s work as Heaven’s ultimate bounty hunter.

Coming out on August 2013

Why?

  1. First off, I read the first book, and it was absolutely amazing!
  2. I hate to say it, but I was sick of the sexual tension between Emma and Eli... Please, I'm praying, Emma, just take him.  I know it means he becomes the Fallen, but then you can have a LOT of fun with him :P.  And that is honestly what I'm hoping will happen in this book.
  3. I see a great amount of conflict, and a great amount of tension to come. But I can't wait!
  4. I love the cover.  How at ease, but dangerous she is on the balcony.  You don't know if she is waiting for her lover, or waiting to pounce and kill you.  Perfect!

So what are you waiting for?
