Reawakened by Ada Adams
5 out of 5

I was so excited about this book.  And let me tell you, it did not disappoint!

First off… The prologue automatically makes you wonder.  Multiple personalities?  Ghost?  Another secret that Dawn doesn’t know?

Characters

Dawn is a character that I can definitely relate to.  Her fears, some of her challenges, her need to protect everyone and to be what everyone needs are all things that I understand… Though nowhere near what she has experienced.  But I felt sorry for her as she struggled to discover more of her past.

Sebastian is still my favorite male of all times!  I loved how he was constantly trying to protect Dawn, even from herself.  And his sacrifice… I can’t say anything else without giving it away, but WOW!

Razor is the complete opposite from Sebastian, and I love that!  You can’t always have only good guys… Sometimes you need a bad boy to show you what you really want.  He definitely added spice to the book.

The Rest of the Book:

I love how the mystery about Dawn’s past connects her to several of the main characters.  Always nice to see how small a literary world can be.

So, for me, 3 things remain:  2 questions and a plea.

1)   Plea first!  PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don’t let that character die!  I’m groveling in hopes that the next book will save this character.
2)   What other secrets are hiding?  I mean, I feel that we have only just scratched the surface and I really need to know more.
3)   What makes Dawn so different?  Is it her forta?  Or is it because she is a clone?  Or is there something else we don’t know (see question 2).

Damn it!  I shouldn’t be crying at the end of a book that is in my top 10 favorites!!!!  And not just the silent tears, no!  These are the snot-drinking, eye-swelling, “Eww, girl, you look gross”, heart-wrenching sobs!  But I still loved this book!

So, did I love this book?  YES!  Do I want you to read it? YES, YES, YES!  Highly recommend this book, and I’m desperately waiting with an adoring looking for Sebastian! :P

In A Shade of Blood, Bella Forrest transports you deeper into a unique, enthralling and beautifully sensitive story.
Prepare to be lost in its pages…

High school, prom and a chance to move on with her life now await her.

But will she be able to forget the horrors that steal her sleep away at night? … and the feelings that haunt her for that tormented prince of darkness?

Review:

A Shade of Blood by Bella Forrest
5 out of 5

While some people would want to escape the Shade, just like Sofia, I couldn’t help but go back to it.  Between Derek and the actual mystery of the Shade and the prophecy, I craved to know what would happen next.  Thankfully, Ms. Forrest didn’t wait long to fulfill this desire to jump back into another of her beautiful novels.

Derek is one of the characters with the largest change.  To go from the hero to a dark and questionable character, shows that anyone can change or show their true colors when given the opportunity.  It was sad that Derek couldn’t be and stay strong without Sofia.  Actually, it was like Derek was making the prophecy self-fulfilling just so he could prevent heartbreak.

Sofia is really special.  I think even more special, more important, than she knows.  But in so many ways, Sofia second guesses herself.  She has so little confidence, until almost the very end.

I have a feeling that the truth about Sofia has yet to be full revealed, and I don’t know if anyone will be able to handle it well.

Vivienne is such a selfless character till the end.  Her willingness to sacrifice everything, including herself, for her family, specifically Derek and his happiness, puts her right up there with Wanda from The Host.  I truly hope she survives and gets a happily-ever-after herself.

Ben, who had been horribly tortured by Claudia at the Shade, has become a dark character.  My heart breaks over what he experienced, but unfortunately, it doesn’t make me like him.  Just because you have been a victim doesn’t mean you have the right to victimize others or force your views on others.

Unexpected Twist:  It was too shocking for words, especially the shock we get at the very end of the novel.  Knowing who Sofia’s parents are and learning some other mysteries definitely was a surprise.

I really enjoyed learning more about the Shade.  Between its history, its government that rules it, and the hierarchy that exists there, I find it extremely interesting how much it compares to feudalism. Which, I guess historically speaking is the time period they all came from.  Another plus about learning about the Shade, was getting to explore it.  From the Cells to the Vale, from the Catacombs to the Lighthouse, the huge expanse of the island is quite impressive.

I loved the allusions to two of my favorite fairytales:  Rose Red and Beauty & the Beast.  Now, you might ask why I said the 2nd story, when only the first one is mentioned in the book.  Both stories are about a beautiful girl and a beast.  But, Beauty & the Beast seems to be closer to this story than Rose Red.

A Shade of Blood is much darker than the first book.  Between the torture, the deaths, and the fighting of Derek’s nature, this book is not for the faint of heart.  But this does not mean that this book is not a beautiful book.  Even with it being dark, I like this book better than the first one.

Overall, this is a really good book.  Really can’t wait for book 3 to come out!  Highly recommend!

Last Kiss Goodnight by Gena Showalter

Description:

The monster inside him yearns to kill her on sight, even though she holds the key to his escape. But the human side of him realizes the beautiful deaf girl is more than she seems—she’s his.

THE ULTIMATE PRICE…

Vika endures the captives’ taunts and loathing, hoping to keep them alive even if she can’t free them. Only, Solo is different—he protects her. But as hostility turns to forbidden romance, his feelings for her will be used against him…and he’ll be put to a killer test.

Review:

Last Kiss Goodnight by Gena Showalter
5 out of 5

OMGOODNESS!!!!!  This is one fan-freaking-tastic book!  Now that I’ve read some of Ms. Showalter’s other books, but this one surpasses the others by a long jump.

The Characters

Solo

He is a strong, unusual looking, alien humanoid that has been hurt by the cruelty of others.  He has a short temper, holds grudges, and is a hired killer.  And he is the good guy!  Yep, behind all of that stuff, he is protective, gentle and love.
I love how he went form a growling, threatening, and angry beast to a loving, strong protector with Vika. It showed just how much he truly cared for her that he was able to subdue the beast inside.

Vika

Like any other abused woman, she does what she can to stay under the radar so as not to get another beating.  But she is drawn to Solo, even though everything about him screams to run away.
I enjoyed seeing the progression of Vika as a character.  Going from a week and frightened girl to a strong and courageous woman was a beautiful transformation.  She really stood up and showed that she wasn’t going to be a victim any more.

Overall

I had a hard time believing that Vika was deaf.  It just seemed too easy for her to communicate with others, especially those who didn’t know that she was deaf.

I loved how the scripture was used at the beginning of each chapter.  Though it is a secular book, I think the scriptures and the spiritual elements blended well together.

My favorite thing of the whole thing though was the vows.  When Solo vowed to Vika (and she back to him) that they would give and share everything they had and they were, I thought that was sweet.  But when, though some mystical/magical/paranormal way, they were able to share hearing, I almost cried.  It was just too sweet, and I loved that.

On a whole, this was a great book.  It did seem a bit tamer than her Alien Huntress books, though they both are in the same world.  I think that it is still a great beginning for a new series.   I can’t wait for the next book in this series.  Highly recommend!

Waiting on Wednesday: The Eternity Cure by Julie Kagawa

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.
This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Description:

Allison Sekemoto has vowed to rescue her creator, Kanin, who is being held hostage and tortured by the psychotic vampire Sarren. The call of blood leads her back to the beginning—New Covington and the Fringe, and a vampire prince who wants her dead yet may become her wary ally.

Even as Allie faces shocking revelations and heartbreak like she’s never known, a new strain of the Red Lung virus that decimated humanity is rising to threaten human and vampire alike.
Coming out on April 23, 2013

Why?

  1. I loved the first book!  It had everything that a reader like me wanted:  Action, romance, hidden mysteries, creepy monsters, and a sacrificing heroine.
  2. I really want to learn more about Kanin and what he had to do with the Red Lung virus.
  3. I wonder if she will ever get to go back to the boy that she loves….If they will ever get to be together.
  4. This cover is cute, but it doesn’t hold the allure that the first cover did.

So what are you waiting for?

Bewitching Book Tours: Release Day Blitz for Magic's Daughter by Ann Gimpel

Magic’s Daughter
By Ann Gimpel

Destined to be surrounded by magic yet have none of her own, Cassie walks a thin line. Her mother is dying and her boyfriend has turned into something that terrifies her. By the time she wakes up to the danger she’s in, it’s nearly too late.
Her clairvoyant friend Jeremy warns her about her scumbag boyfriend, but she’s not listening. Deeply disturbing events unfold. Cassie’s life hangs in the balance. She and Jeremy join forces to battle the darkness threatening them. Meanwhile, Cassie warms to Jeremy in ways she never could have anticipated. Love was always there if she’d just opened her eyes and looked.

Excerpt:
Cassionetta Ceobbinn sat in her old Subaru and rested her forehead against its steering wheel. Her electronic design work had ground to a halt an hour earlier and a headache pounded behind one eye. The garage of the Capitol Hill mansion rose around her, silent as a crypt. Her mother’s Aston Martin sat off to one side, gleaming white against the semi-darkness. Cassie girded herself to open her car door, grab her things, and go inside. “It’s my house, goddammit,” she muttered to boost her courage. “So what if he sent me a text message not to come home.”
The garage lights came on, blinding her. The door leading into the house crashed against the wall. Before the ringing in her ears subsided, her live-in boyfriend stomped to her car. Well, the live-in part was still accurate. The boyfriend part seemed to have evaporated like so much smoke.
“You weren’t supposed to come home tonight,” he growled. “I texted you hours ago. You can just turn that piece of shit you drive around and go stay at your mother’s office.”
Fury boiled up from her guts. She took aim and opened the car door hard into his midsection, hoping she could clip a ball for good measure.
“Oooph. You little bitch.” He jumped back rubbing his hip.
You bet I am. High heels slapping the concrete floor, she jumped out of her car and stood eyeball to eyeball with him. “This is my mother’s house, Tyler MacKenzie. I live here. Or have you forgotten?” Cassie yanked her shoulder bag and computer case off the passenger side of the front seat and stormed past him.
He grabbed her arm before she made the steps leading into the kitchen. “I have people over. It’s the full moon. I’m leading a séance. Your presence would disturb the energy.”
She twirled to face him, breaking his grip. “You mean you have mother’s clients over. Where is she, by the way?”
He shrugged. “Don’t know. Haven’t seen her.”
Cassie turned away from him. He closed his hand over her arm again, hard enough to make her squeal. “If you don’t let me go,” she snarled through clenched teeth, “I will call the police.”
His fingers loosened marginally. “But, sweetie…”
She heard compulsion beneath his words. Cassie didn’t have any magic of her own, but she recognized it in others. When Tyler wanted her to fall in love with him, he’d used honeyed words all the time. They’d only stopped once she let him move in.
“Can it.” She twisted her head so she could lock gazes with him. “Let me go. Now.” His hand fell away. “I want you out of here tomorrow—”
His eyes narrowed. He shoved long, red-gold hair out of his face and sneered at her. “Fat fucking chance of that. We’ve had this conversation one too many times for my liking. I’m here, and I intend to stay. There’s nothing you can do about it. Unless you want to meet with an unfortunate accident.” A nasty laugh bubbled past lips she’d actually thought were full and sensual. “Of course something like that could happen anyway. If I were you, sweetie, I’d watch my back.”
Cassie shuddered. She swallowed, but her mouth was dry. Maybe she’d underestimated Tyler. Once they’d stopped getting along, she’d seen him as an inconvenience, not a menace. He’d never sounded quite like this before though. There’d been threats, but they’d been subtle, veiled in double entendre.
She squared her shoulders and turned to face him. It was the kiss of death to let bullies know they were getting to you. “I’m done with your crap.” She infused as much venom as she could into her voice. “I will call the police. You threatened me.”
He snorted. “I’d just deny it. They’ll believe we had a lover’s spat. Women are so emotional.” His blue eyes gleamed with an unnatural light.
She blinked. For a moment, he looked like a demon one of her mother’s psychic friends had raised by accident. Cassie knew enough about them—interdimensional beings that traveled from world to world wreaking havoc—to scare the shit out of her.
Don’t be ridiculous. Ridiculous, ridiculous echoed in her head. I’m seeing things.
Her heartbeat sounded loud in her ears; her hands fisted at her sides. “You’d better get back to your séance. Wouldn’t want any of those high rollers to get away.”
Her face twisted into a grimace. Thank Christ he spun on his heel and trotted smartly back into the house. Tyler cut an elegant figure with his richly-embroidered gypsy cape, broad shoulders, and classically handsome Nordic features. Flowing ruby silk pants rode low on his slim hips. No wonder she’d been taken in by him.
Fuming—and scared half to death—she followed him into the house, but turned a hard left before she hit the kitchen and took what had once been the servants’ staircase. It had been stupid to fall for Tyler, one of the dumbest things she’d ever done, but there was no going back. She couldn’t unravel time and choose not to tumble into his arms and his bed. That part was a done deal. If she listened to him, his residency at chéz Eleanora was a done deal as well.
Shit!
Worry for her mother filled her, obliterating her fears for her own safety. Eleanora Ceobbinn was—or had been—a well-known psychic, but she’d apparently made one too many trips to the far side of the veil. She was still alive, but she hadn’t spoken a word in nearly a year, rattling around their old house like a ghost.
Eleanora had come from money—and made plenty on her own—so at least that wasn’t a problem, but her mother was definitely fading. It was almost as if someone—Tyler?—were feeding off what little energy she had left. Unable to shake her earlier sense of foreboding, Cassie shivered. If she hadn’t been holding onto her purse and computer bag, she would have wrapped her arms around herself.
Maybe because she was thinking about her mother—and the house had a mind of its own—she wasn’t surprised to find herself beneath a full-sized oil painting of Eleanora. Lush dark hair ended at knee level and her haunting violet eyes seemed alive. People had told Cassie she looked like her mom, but she’d never thought so. Eleanora was beautiful—and ageless. Cassie had the hair and the eyes and the striking six foot height, but the effect wasn’t nearly the same.
She still had no idea what had gone wrong the day her mother checked out. She’d come home from work to find Eleanora sprawled face down on the Oriental carpet in the séance room, candles smoking black gouts of greasy flame. If there’d been clients, they were nowhere to be found.
Her mother had regained consciousness, but that had been about all. Cassie had known better than to lug her around to a bunch of other doctors with their uncomfortable questions and pained silences after the first one had asked, “Your mother does what for a living?”
Cassie dragged herself away from the portrait. When she was a little girl, she’d believed her mother’s painted eyes were the gateway to a magical world. She’d asked Eleanora and her mother had smiled shrewdly. “Stranger things have happened, child,” she’d said. “It’s best not to test this one.”

Renegade by J. A. Souder

Description:

Since the age of three, sixteen-year-old Evelyn Winters has been trained to be Daughter of the People in the underwater utopia known as Elysium. Selected from hundreds of children for her ideal genes, all her life she’s thought that everything was perfect; her world. Her people. The Law.

But when Gavin Hunter, a Surface Dweller, accidentally stumbles into their secluded little world, she’s forced to come to a startling realization: everything she knows is a lie.

Her memories have been altered.

Her mind and body aren’t under her own control.

And the person she knows as Mother is a monster.

Together with Gavin she plans her escape, only to learn that her own mind is a ticking time bomb... and Mother has one last secret that will destroy them all.

My Review:

Renegade by J. A. Souder
5 out of 5

This is a world that is a blonde hair, blue eyed, brain washing, experimenting, killing machine under the sea.  (And now that I’ve got you singing “Under the Sea”, let me tell you, this is NO fairytale!).

Evelyn/Evie (and for the rest of the review, she shall be called Evie) is a very sweet, very naïve girl, and is stubborn as a mule to boot (which she probably hasn’t even seen one to know what a mule looks like).  She knows she is missing something in her memory, and she just isn’t sure what it is.  And though I thought I knew what she was, I was still surprised when it was confirmed.  I do love that her strength and her love keep her moving and protecting Gavin.  I thought that was what truly made her a wonderful character.  You just want her to win and succeed and get a happily-ever-after ending.

Gavin is my absolute favorite!  He is sweet, he is smart, he is funny, he is brave.  He is the perfect “Good guy” that you want to love!  No more team bad boy for me… I’m Team Gavin the Good Guy all the way! (We will make shirts and at like the doe-eyed twi-girls :P).

Mother sounds like a crazy, blonde, silver-eyed, female Hitler.  Absolutely frightening and horrible.  She honestly gives me the chills every time!

At first it was a bit disconcerting to have the first several chapters start out the EXACT SAME WAY.  At first, I thought “What the heck?!?!  Is my reader malfunctioning?”  And then I realized what was happening… And that just added to the creep factor.

I found the dystopian world to be eerie.  But then you add the experiments to the mix and you have the worst possible, scariest, run-for-your-life scenes possible!  Actually, some of the experiments reminded me more of zombies than mutations... but what are zombies but the mutation of death.

I must say that the end of the book, the last chapter was filled with so much emotion: Hope, peace, fear, confusion, alienation, love, happiness.  There was so much, and you wanted to take it all in.  You want Evie and Gavin to get together, to live happily ever after, and to just live forever with amazing relationship schedule.

Overall, I found this book to be a well-written, enjoyable book, and I’m craving more!  Highly recommend!

Happy Reading!

Bewitching Book Tours: Sentinels of New Orleans by Suzanne Johnson

Royal Street
Sentinels of New Orleans Book One
Suzanne Johnson

Book Description:

As the junior wizard sentinel for New Orleans, Drusilla Jaco's job involves a lot more potion-mixing and pixie-retrieval than sniffing out supernatural bad guys like rogue vampires and lethal were-creatures. DJ's boss and mentor, Gerald St. Simon, is the wizard tasked with protecting the city from anyone or anything that might slip over from the preternatural beyond.

Then Hurricane Katrina hammers New Orleans' fragile levees, unleashing more than just dangerous flood waters. While winds howled and Lake Pontchartrain surged, the borders between the modern city and the Otherworld crumbled. Now the undead and the restless are roaming the Big Easy, and a serial killer with ties to voodoo is murdering soldiers sent to help the city recover.

To make it worse, Gerald St. Simon has gone missing, the wizards' Elders have assigned a grenade-toting assassin as DJ's new partner, and undead pirate Jean Lafitte wants to make her walk his plank. The search for Gerry and the killer turns personal when DJ learns the hard way that loyalty requires sacrifice, allies come from the unlikeliest places, and duty mixed with love creates one bitter roux.

Excerpt:

A secluded Louisiana bayou. A sexy pirate. Seduction and deceit. My Friday afternoon had the makings of a great romantic adventure, at least in theory.
In practice, angry mosquitoes were using me for target practice, humidity had ruined any prayer of a good hair day, and the pirate in question―the infamous Jean Lafitte―was two-hundred years old, armed, and carrying a six-pack of Paradise condoms in assorted fruit flavors.
I wasn’t sure what unnerved me more—the fact that the historical undead had discovered erotic accessories, or that Lafitte felt the need to practice safe sex.
Nothing about the pirate looked safe. Tall and broad-shouldered, he had dark blue eyes and a smile twitching at the corners of his mouth as he watched me set two glasses and a bottle of dark rum on a rickety wooden table. A tanned, muscular chest peeked from his open-collared shirt, and shaggy dark hair framed a clean-shaven face. A jagged scar across his jaw reminded me the so-called gentleman pirate also had his ruthless side.
He’d arrived by way of a stolen boat at this isolated cabin near Delacroix, a half-hour outside New Orleans, to pursue two of the world’s most timeless pleasures: sex and money. I’d met him here to play the role of a gullible young wizard falling under the spell of the legendary pirate, at least for a while. Then I’d do my duty as deputy sentinel and send his swashbuckling hide back to the Beyond, where he could rub shoulders with other undead legends and preternatural creatures unfit for polite human company.
My hand shook as I poured the rum, sloshing a few drops of amber liquid over the side of the glass. I’d finally been given a serious assignment, and I needed it to go without a hitch.
Lafitte’s fingers brushed mine as he took the drink, sending an unexpected rush of energy up my arm. “Merci, Mademoiselle Jaco—or may I call you Drusilla?”
Actually, I’d prefer he didn’t call me anything. Despite his obvious hopes for the evening, this wasn’t a date. “Most people call me DJ.”
“Bah,” he said, taking a sip of rum. “Those are alphabet letters, not a name.”
From beneath the red sash that accented his waist, Lafitte pulled a modern semiautomatic handgun and set it on the table next to the rum bottle. I knew how he’d gotten it—he’d rolled the Tulane student that summoned him, lifted the kid’s wallet and iPod, rode the streetcar to Canal Street, and made a trade for the gun. Enterprising guy, Lafitte.
I pondered the odd spike of energy I’d gotten from his hand. Touching increases the emotional crap I absorb from people as an empath, but Lafitte was technically a dead guy. Still, I’d like to say if he touched me again, I’d demand double pay from the wizards’ Congress of Elders. Triple if it involved lips.
But who was I kidding? My bargaining position was nonexistent. My boss Gerry only sent me on this run because he had something else to do and knew Lafitte might respond to my questionable seduction skills.
I’d pulled my unruly blonde hair out of its usual ponytail for the occasion, loaded on some makeup to play up my teal eyes, and poured myself into a little black skirt, short enough to show off my legs while not offending Lafitte’s nineteenth-century sensibilities.
It must have worked, because the pirate was giving me that head-to-toe appraisal guys do on instinct, like they’re assessing a juicy slab of beef and deciding whether they want it rare, medium, or well-done.
“You really are lovely, Drusilla.” The timbre of Lafitte’s voice shivered down my spine, and I fought the urge to check out the biceps underneath that linen shirt.
Holy crap. This was just wrong. I should not be absorbing his lust.

River Road
Sentinels of New Orleans, Book 2
Suzanne Johnson

Book Description:

Hurricane Katrina is long gone, but the preternatural storm rages on in New Orleans. New species from the Beyond moved into Louisiana after the hurricane destroyed the borders between worlds, and it falls to wizard sentinel Drusilla Jaco and her partner, Alex Warin, to keep the preternaturals peaceful and the humans unaware. But a war is brewing between two clans of Cajun merpeople in Plaquemines Parish, and down in the swamp, DJ learns, there’s more stirring than angry mermen and the threat of a were-gator.

Wizards are dying, and something—or someone—from the Beyond is poisoning the waters of the mighty Mississippi, threatening the humans who live and work along the river. DJ and Alex must figure out what unearthly source is contaminating the water and who—or what—is killing the wizards. Is it a malcontented merman, the naughty nymph, or some other critter altogether? After all, DJ’s undead suitor, the pirate Jean Lafitte, knows his way around a body or two.

It’s anything but smooth sailing on the bayou as the Sentinels of New Orleans series continues.

Excerpt:

The minute hand of the ornate grandfather clock crept like a gator stuck in swamp mud. I’d been watching it for half an hour, nursing a fizzy cocktail from my perch inside the Hotel Monteleone. The plaque on the enormous clock claimed it had been hand- carved of mahogany in 1909, about 130 years after the birth of the undead pirate waiting for me upstairs.
They were both quite handsome, but the clock was a lot safer.
The infamous Jean Lafitte had expected me at seven. He’d summoned me to his French Quarter hotel suite by courier like I was one of his early nineteenth-century wenches, and I hated to destroy his pirate-king delusions, but the historical undead don’t summon wizards. We summon them.
I’d have blown him off if my boss on the Congress of Elders hadn’t ordered me to comply and my co-sentinel, Alex, hadn’t claimed a prior engagement.
At seven thirty, I abandoned my drink, took a deep breath, and marched through the lobby toward the bank of elevators.
On the long dead-man-walking stroll down the carpeted hallway, I imagined all the horrible requests Jean might make. He’d saved my life a few years ago, after Hurricane Katrina sent the city into freefall, and I hadn’t seen him since. I’d been desperate at the time. I might have promised him unfettered access to modern New Orleans in exchange for his assistance. I might have promised him a place to live. I might have promised him things I don’t even remember. In other words, I might be totally screwed.
I reached the door of the Eudora Welty Suite and knocked, reflecting that Jean Lafitte probably had no idea who Eudora Welty was, and wouldn’t like her if he did. Ms. Welty had been a modern sort of woman who wouldn’t hop to attention when summoned by a scoundrel.
He didn’t answer immediately. I’d made him wait, after all, and Jean lived in a tit- for- tat world. I paused a few breaths and knocked harder. Finally, he flung open the door, waving me inside to a suite plush with tapestries of peach and royal blue, thick carpet that swallowed the narrow heels of my pumps, and a plasma TV he couldn’t possibly know how to operate. What a waste.
“You have many assets, Drusilla, but apparently a respect for time is not among them.” Deep, disapproving voice, French accent, broad shoulders encased in a red linen shirt, long dark hair pulled back into a tail, eyes such a cobalt blue they bordered on navy. And technically speaking, dead.
He was as sexy as ever.
“Sorry.” I slipped my hand in my skirt pocket, fingering the small pouch of magic-infused herbs I carried at all times. My mojo bag wouldn’t help with my own perverse attraction to the man, but it would keep my empathic abilities in check. If he still had a perverse attraction to me, I didn’t want to feel it.
He eased his six-foot-two frame into a sturdy blue chair and slung one long leg over the arm as he gave me a thorough eyeraking, a ghost of a smile on his face.
I perched on the edge of the adjacent sofa, easing back against a pair of plump throw pillows, and looked at him expectantly. I hoped what ever he wanted wouldn’t jeopardize my life, my job, or my meager bank account.
“You are as lovely as ever, Jolie,” Jean said, trotting out his pet name for me that sounded deceptively intimate and brought back a lot of memories, most of them bad. “I will forgive your tardiness— perhaps you were late because you were selecting clothing that I would like.” His gaze lingered on my legs. “You chose beautifully.”
I’d picked a conservative black skirt and simple white blouse with the aim of looking professional for a business meeting, part of my ongoing attempt to prove to the Elders I was a mature wizard worthy of a pay raise. But this was Jean Lafitte, so I should have worn coveralls. I’d forgotten what a letch he could be.
“I have a date after our meeting,” I lied. He didn’t need to know said date involved a round carton with the words Blue Bell Ice Cream printed on front. “Why did you want to see me?”
There, that hadn’t been so difficult—just a simple request. No drama. No threats. No double- entendre. Straight to business.
“Does a man need a reason to see a beautiful woman? Especially one who is indebted to him, and who has made him many promises?” A slow smile spread across his face, drawing my eyes to his full lips and the ragged scar that trailed his jawline.
I might be the empath in the room, but he knew very well that, in some undead kind of way, I thought he was hot.
I felt my face warming to the shade of a trailer- trash bridesmaid’s dress, one whose color had a name like raging rouge. I’d had a similar reaction when I first met Jean in 2005, two days before a mean hurricane with a sissy name turned her malevolent eye toward the Gulf Coast. I blamed my whole predicament on Katrina, the bitch.
Her winds had driven the waters of Lake Pontchartrain into the canals that crisscrossed the city, collapsing levees and filling the low, concave metro area like a gigantic soup bowl.
But NBC Nightly News and Anderson Cooper had missed the biggest story of all: how, after the storm, a mob of old gods, historical undead, and other preternatural victims of the scientific age flooded New Orleans. As a wizard, I’d had a ringside seat. Now, three years later, the wizards had finally reached accords with the major preternatural ruling bodies, and the borders were down, as of two days ago. Jean hadn’t wasted any time.
