Hadrian’s reputation is both legendary and lethal; he is ruthless, bloodthirsty, lusty, and soulless. When Eva arrives at the ancient fortress high in the Carpathian Mountains, she is shocked to find a ravaged man with dark burning eyes filled with loneliness and dangerous desire.

Would she be his lover…or his prey? His savior…or his victim? Would Hadrian lure her into madness or would their perilous passion be their redemption?

Coming out on January 25, 2013

Why?

  1. I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR WAY, WAY, WAY TOO LONG FOR THIS BOOK.  I don't think I really need to give a reason why, but I will :).  The first 2 books in this series were amazing and steaming hot.... *Fanning myself*  So of course this one will be too (*fingers crossed, and happily jumping up and down in my seat!).
  2. Sounds like a good book. The struggle between good and evil, both within and without, always make for an interesting romance.
  3. Yes, the cover is like penny bodice ripper, but who really cares?

So what are you waiting for?

Excerpt:

Evan.

She rolled his name through her mind, resisted the desire to taste the flavor of it on her tongue. Maybe if she wasn’t touching him she could do this…carry on a normal conversation. She struggled for something to say, something that would cover this incredible desire to fuck a complete stranger.

“Welcome to Radon,” she managed to get out. “How do you like it so far?” Inane. Moronic. But it was out now. She hoped he couldn’t see the shaking that had started at his touch, or smell the moisture between her legs. Lucky he was only human.

Calm down, Red! You can do this. You have to do this.

“It’s been interesting. It’s a pretty tight-knit little town.” His smile had warmed, become friendly. And interested.

She knew what that appraising look meant. She’d received it from all the available males her parents had invited to their house in an effort to entice her to settle down. But that look from the bachelor wolves had never made her feel like this. Feel like her whole body was tuned in to his. Like she should get on all fours and push her ass in the air, spread her legs, and beg.

Her palms were damp. She caught him checking her out and was glad her hoodie was zipped up tight and covered her chest. Her nipples had tightened so fast, so hard, they almost hurt.

“Town’s been a little tough on you, huh?” she asked. Poor guy, he couldn’t have known what coming to this area would be like. They hadn’t had a ranger in the area who wasn’t pack in her lifetime. The county was up in arms.

“You could say that.” He shot her a conspiratorial smile that warmed his eyes to molten chocolate. She had a sudden vivid picture of a sheepskin rug and him lying naked in front of a fire, her lips and tongue tracing the contoured lines of muscles illuminated by the flames.

She dragged her mind back and forced it to focus on the present. Focus on the words coming out from between his sexy lips.
“You’re the friendliest person I’ve run into in this town. Where have you been hiding?”

Wrong question ranger. The question was who had been hiding him from her? Now her mother keeping her home from work to make jam had begun to make sense. Maybe her mother would never think she was an adult. Although maybe her mother was right, given her lusty thoughts, maybe she should be sequestered.

“I normally work at the general store in town. I must have just missed you.” Yeah right. Did that sound as lame to him as it had to her? She lifted her chin. Her mother had been making up excuses to keep her at the family’s house all week. Despite being sent off to the boonies she had met the hot new guy in town.
Her mother’s plan had backfired.

“Is that Burdock’s? It’s the only general store I’ve seen.” One long hand reached up, pushed his thatch of hair back off his face in an unconscious slow sensual movement. The hair fell forward back into place as soon as he released it, dark and thick.

“Yeah, I guess you’ve been in there.”

“Yeah. Is the black haired dude with the bad-ass attitude who mans the counter related?” His eyes crinkled up at the corners when he smiled. An urge to spread her thighs slid through her. In an effort to control it, she clenched them tight.

What had he asked?

“Seth,” she said, relieved she knew what to say. “He’s one of my brothers. He’s none too happy that you’re here.”

“Why is that?”

“Let’s just say that we’re a typical small town. Outsiders aren’t really welcome.”

“You know, you’re the first woman I’ve met under thirty all week. I was beginning to wonder where they all were.”

Dangerous territory here. She’d better be careful of what she said. Obviously the alphas had the few available females under lock and key.

“We have a surplus of men in this town. You probably just missed the women.” She shouldn’t be talking to him. He made her so nervous, she just knew she would slip and let something out. Something that would alert him that all was not as it seemed in small town Radon, Colorado.

“Well it’s been nice chatting, but I have to get going.”

She smiled and started to move off down the path again, but he stepped in front of her, blocked her.

The back of her neck prickled.

She supposed he was eager to talk to the only friendly face in town, but she wished he would back off. She was having enough trouble controlling herself as it was. Her heightened senses told her to take action. Now.

He’d moved too close. His spicy male scent filled her nostrils, caressed her skin. Made her want to bury her face in the crook of his neck and inhale, suck him in like oxygen before going underwater.

“Where are you off to?”

“My grandmother lives up the mountain. I’m just going to check on her and stay a while.”

His face lost its easy smile, grew concerned. “You’re hiking up the mountain by yourself? A woman like you shouldn’t be out here alone.” She bristled at his statement. Just like her brother! What was it with men and their bossy attitudes?

“A woman like me? Slow down buster! I’ve been hiking this mountain since I could walk. You’re out here alone, why not me?”

“But I’m a trained outdoorsman. You hardly look prepared in those shorts if the weather changes. What do you have in that pack?” He moved closer to her, and she backed up, suppressing the desire to bare her teeth. With relief she channeled her newfound sexuality into anger instead. This she understood.

Human or not, he was beginning to get her back up, just like any other male.

“I’ll be at Grandma’s before dark. And it’s an incredible day. No storm in sight. See ya.” She edged around him and moved back onto the path, determined to put him and temptation, behind her.

“Wait, I’ll go with you. There are signs of hunters in the area, you shouldn’t be hiking alone.” He picked up his oversize pack with ease. Then scrambled, trying to buckle the waist straps and keep up with her at the same time. She stepped up the pace.

She could feel him close behind, knew he was eye level with her ass. Knew he watched her backside swish with each step.

Her tingling nerves began to send messages again. With him nipping at her ankles, she felt like prey.

“No, thanks. You won’t be able to keep up.” She moved faster, pumped her legs in a rapid rhythm on the familiar trail.

His legs might be longer than hers, but she had Were stamina and a light pack. No way he could keep up with her for long.

“Hey, I’ve been through hell in the military. If I could keep up in basic, then I can keep up with you little girl.”

She laughed, flashed a catch-ya-later look over her shoulder, and put on a hair more speed. He’d find out soon enough that she might be little, but she had more oomph in this little package than most. And he could just watch her swish her tail until she was out of sight.

Audio Book: The Warlord Wants Forever by Kresley Cole

Description:

Nikolai Wroth, once a ruthless human warlord in the 1700s and now a general in the rebel vampire army, needs to find his Bride, the one woman who can render him truly alive. As a turned human, he doesn’t enjoy a heartbeat or breaths and is consequently weaker than fully blooded vampires. He wants his Bride for the power she will bring him and can hardly believe it when his heart beats for Myst the Coveted, a mad, fey, mythological creature.

Myst is known throughout the world as the most beautiful Valkyrie, part chillingly fierce warrior, part beguiling seductress who can “make you want her even as she’s killing you.” She has devoted her life to protecting an ancient, powerful jewel and to fighting the vampires, and she now sees a way to torment one—for with Wroth’s heartbeat comes consuming sexual desire that can only be slaked by her.

She eludes him for five years, but he has finally chased her to ground and stolen the jewel which commands her, giving him absolute power over her. While he possesses it, he can make her do anything, and he plans to in order for her to experience firsthand the agonizing, unending lust she’d purposely subjected him to for half a decade. Yet when Wroth realizes he wants more from her and frees her, will she come back to him?

Review:
The Warlord Wants Forever by Kresley Cole
4 out of 5

The Characters:

Nikolai

Even though he is 300 yrs old, he knows very little about the Lore.  I think that is one of the main reasons that he is drawn to Myst.  She knows the answers, if only she will give them to him.
He doesn’t seem to know what to do with Myst.  As his bride, he is drawn to her, but he really doesn’t know how to treat her.   Then you add the conflict with King Kristoph, and you have a royal conundrum.
I thought it was ironic how after being trapped in a form of sexual torture for 5 years, he does something similar to Myst.

Myst

At first, she seemed as crazy as Nix.  But she really wasn’t… I think after centuries of being the bait to all their enemies, Myst is just really good at portraying what she thinks her targets want.
She is a strong woman who will be thoroughly loyal to those she loves.
I think it was great that she figured out that she wanted him in the middle of the novella, instead of at the end, like her sisters.  But that doesn’t mean that she tells him.

Overall

This was an interesting short story.  I think it helps us understand a bit better the vampire society, specifically the Forebearers.  I also think it gives us a beautiful story of learning to love and to understand the one you love.

The only thing I wished there had been more of was information on Myst’s golden chain.  I mean, who gave it to her?  What is its purpose?

Overall, this is a great story.  Highly recommend it.

ARC: The Water Witch by Juliet Dark

Only there is a more dangerous creature than Liam in the Borderlands. The Water Witch is also looking for a way back...

Review:

The Water Witch by Juliet Dark
3 out of 5

So first off, the first, 120-150 pages reminded me why I have a hard time reading Ms. Dark’s last book, Demon Lover.  There is a slow flow that is almost too slow, and it has way too many details!

Callie is a whiney character who has guilt issues, as well as other issues that make her irritating.  Now, she does have some redeeming qualities:  Her loyalty, her willingness to learn, her stubbornness, all of that makes her a palatable character, but nothing more.  She is also a relatable character because of her constantly returning to her “unhealthy” relationship with Liam.  We’ve all had those kinds of relationships, so it does make her more relatable.

Duncan Laird bothered me from the start.  He seemed too good to be true and too conveniently appeared when Callie needed a tutor.  And in these books, there is no such thing as a coincident.  Plus, look at his name (all you baby name books who know the meanings...), Ms. Dark literally sets it up for us to realize SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT!

Bill the Handyman and Liam the Incubus.  Sort of saw this coming… But on Bill, I loved how he behaved.  Also I think that Liam had finally figured out things, and truly loves Callie with his whole being.

Ralph the Mouse:  I want one!  I love Ralph and the way he seems to be smarter than Callie a lot of the time just reiterates how dense she is.  Plus, he loves to read!  What better kind of pet/familiar is there for a reader?

The chaos between the Grove and IMP, the Elves/Nephiliums, and the potential doors to Faeirie all being closed seems to help balance out Callie’s emotional chaos.  I will admit that I enjoyed learning more about Faeirie mythology according to Ms. Dark.

I HATE cliffhangers!  And this book has a huge one (like giant elephant huge), which just sets it all up for book 3.  Now, I will probably have to read book 3 because I need a resolution!  But I’m hoping, deep down inside that the next book will be better than the last 2 books.

So do I recommend this book?  Yes, it is an okay book.  But will I re-read it?  Nope.

The Mage in Black by Jaye Wells

Description:

Sabina Kane doesn't have the best track record when it comes to family. After all, her own grandmother, the leader of the vampire race, just tried to kill her. When she arrives in New York to meet the mage side of her family, the reunion takes the fun out of dysfunctional.

On top of that, the Hekate Council wants to use her as a pawn in the brewing war against the vampires. Her mission will take her into the bowels of New York's Black Light district, entangles her in mage politics, and challenges her beliefs about the race she was raised to distrust. And Sabina thought vampires were bloodthirsty.

Review:
The Mage in Black by Jaye Wells
5 out of 5

This fast pace book picks right back up where the 1st one left off.  Literally, they are in the car on the way to New York…

Sabina:  May I just vent just an itty-bitty bit?  Can I just say that Sabina is the BIGGEST idiot in the whole wide world!  WTH!  Slade is ok, but why waste your time when you have a yummy Adam Lazarus there willing to break all the rules for YOU?  Ugh!  And she sure as hell should feel guilty!  Uber guilty.

Anyways, besides that, I do like Sabina.  She is a strong character that has been wounded and betrayed multiple times. And as such she is slow to trust.  This whole book is about Sabina getting to know herself, learning about her other side of her family and discovering what really matters in life.

I love how Maisey is the polar opposite twin.  But she was reminded me slightly of Vinka… Sweet, gentle and a bit too Naïve.  I thought it was interesting on how different she was to Sabina.  It did give an interesting idea/twist to the “Nature vs. Nurture” debate.

Rhea is a really cool older mage. She is strong willed, has a wicked sense of humor, and at times was a real bitch… Definitely loved her.  Laughed so hard when she asked Giguhl why his penis was forked… It was too much!

Giguhl and Volva (not to be confused with vulva!) were some of the funniest (and horniest) characters What a perfect couple to energize the book with a lot of laughter.

So much happened in this book.  You meet werewolves, vampires, and mages.  You read about Demon Fight Club and learn more about the prophecy about Sabina.  Plus, you have to keep guessing on who is trying to kill Sabina.  I mean, really, how many people could really want her dead?  :P

Overall, this is a great book.  Absolutely loved it and I’m looking forward to reading the next book.

Happy Reading!

Waiting on Wednesday: Poison by Bridget Zinn

Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.
This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Description:

Sixteen-year-old Kyra, a highly-skilled potions master, is the only one who knows her kingdom is on the verge of destruction—which means she’s the only one who can save it. Faced with no other choice, Kyra decides to do what she does best: poison the kingdom’s future ruler, who also happens to be her former best friend.

But, for the first time ever, her poisoned dart… misses.

Now a fugitive instead of a hero, Kyra is caught in a game of hide-and-seek with the king’s army and her potioner ex-boyfriend, Hal. At least she’s not alone. She’s armed with her vital potions, a too-cute pig, and Fred, the charming adventurer she can’t stop thinking about. Kyra is determined to get herself a second chance (at murder), but will she be able to find and defeat the princess before Hal and the army find her?

Kyra is not your typical murderer, and she’s certainly no damsel-in-distress—she’s the lovable and quick-witted hero of this romantic novel that has all the right ingredients to make teen girls swoon.

Coming out on March 12, 2013

Why?

  1. Great strong, smart female character.  This is exactly what YA and Adult readers need to see.
  2. I see great potential from this synopsis.  i mean, who wouldn't want to read about a strong girl, a cute pig, and an adventurer running in the wilds avoiding armies and ex-boyfriends.  Great amount of drama to come, I'm sure
  3. Beautiful cover.  At first, I thought this was going to be a Fairy-tale retelling about Snow White, but covers can be deceiving.

So what are you waiting for?

Happy Reading!

Smoke & Mirrors by Marie Treanor

Description:

Deceit and desire, and a treasure beyond price...

When struggling Scottish writer Nell Black accepts a one-off job with the police, translating for an arson suspect from the isolated ex-Soviet republic of Zavrekestan, she stumbles into a terrifying world of organized crime and paranormal abilities that turns her whole belief system upside down. Faced with an incomparable thief, hit men who spontaneously combust, gangsters, drug dealers, British Intelligence and a fiery goddess, Nell no longer knows who to trust. The man who saves her life is a criminal to whom deceit is second nature. He has more smoke screens and more plans in motion than anyone else can keep track of. He is, moreover, probably insane. Even his fellow gangsters are afraid of him. So why is he the one man Nell wants to touch her?

Rodion Kosar is in trouble. His convoluted plans all lead to one goal - the retrieval of his treasure - and to achieve that, he needs Nell to believe he isn't the bad guy. He has many reasons beyond his own desires to make love to her. Especially when a plan goes wrong and he has to play dead before someone really kills him - either the police, the menacing Russian crime lord known as the Bear, or the powerful Guardian of the Gifted whom he's defied once too often. Nell's burgeoning gift of second sight could be his best route to the treasure, and yet keeping her with him spells danger. For Nell has her own agenda, her own mission, and she could just as easily cause his final downfall.

My Review:

Smoke & Mirrors by Marie Treanor
5 out of 5

Let me tell you, this is another great book by Marie Treanor, BUT I still prefer my ancient vampires to her fire starter.  Still, this book is amazing.

Yelena “Nell” Black is an interesting character.  Skeptic, psychic dreamer, daughter of an immigrant and a thief, a translator, and after all of that, she is completely unsure of herself.  She makes one of the best unlikeliest heroes ever, and I love that.  You know she will be one of the heroes, but you just aren’t sure how she is going to become the hero.  I love that!

Rodion Kosar is a criminal from Zavrekestan, a gifted supernatural fire-starter (would that make him a pyropath?), and is a major pain in the ass to the Guardian.  Overall, the best kind of bad boy in a book that I’ve read in a while.  Tough, sexy, and trying to save his siblings just tip that sexy bad boy scale in his favor, of course!

Full of action, sometimes, I had was wondering when they were going to have some down time for some loving!  J  I mean, I love the action, I love the mystery of everything going on, what the treasure is, and if Nell and Rodion is going to make it, but I really wanted those steamy, yummy chocolate dipped scenes.

There was a bit of confusion for me when it came to the drug lords.  You know, like who was who, and then there was the confusion on who Derryn was and what he had to do with the actual story.

Favorite quote:  “I love you.” “Thank you.”  Really, it was the closest thing to Han & Leia’s “I love you.” “I know.”  I literally laughed out loud, and so hard that my co-workers thought something was wrong!  I mean, what girl wouldn’t want to tell someone that you love them and them tell you “Thank you.”  What the heck!  But, Nell  knew exactly what he meant.

Going from Scotland to Zavrekestan, seeing different cultures, languages and lifestyles, and everything in between the growing relationship between Nell and Rodion, it is one wild ride.  Overall, this is a great book, and I’m looking forward to more from this series, as well as more from Ms. Treanor.
